My drive spins up makes 6 clicking noises but is

My Western digital Mybook 500 GB Essential edition drive spins up makes 6 distinctive clicks, but is not recognized by the computer (Windows XP). I can find it in the device manager but that just just says it's unreadable and I cant access it to format it. When I go to the drive manager it doesn't show up.

Are the sounds similar to any of these: these sounds? If your drive is still under warranty you should be able to replace the drive. If you need to recover files you will need to send the drive into data recovery lab. There's no way you can do it at home I'm afraid.

The drive is damaged (probably a read head) from age, dust or being dropped. You may be able to get it replaced for free if your manufacturer warranty is not expired!

You can try to take the drive out and piggy back it on anther working system, this will see if the board for your mybook is fried and just not turning on the drive. I've seen a few of these in my time, usaully when its making that noise, the actual board went on the drive and the only way to get those up is to try and replace the hard drives board.

Here is a link on how to open up your mybook essential:

Usually when the drive starts knocking there hard to get back, some people put them in the freezer for 20min or so loosen up the heads and get the arm and everything spinning again.

Computer does not recognize external hard drive, western dig 320 g. It has been making clicking noises before it started this problem.

Clicking noises are not an issue, as the hard drive uses voice coil technology, which clicks. Plug into another USB drive.

Help with MyBook 500 GB- it makes a clicking sound and does not appear on my MAC desktop.

You have a bad hard drive. The clicking is a giveaway that something is wrong. Replace the hard drive.
I hope you had backed up your data, otherwise it may be gone. It's very expensive to have data recovered from a bad drive.....hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars.

WD Mybook 500 GB does seem to spin, computer can't recognize it. Is it junk now?

The hard disk is not reading. Unplug it to prevent further damage. Don't worry in many cases you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

LOST AC ADAPTER

Go to radioshack or any like store and take your MyBook with you.
It needs a 12 volt adapter and they have the proper fitting for you. Or you can go on ebay for it.
