Question about Brother HL 2140 Laser Printer

Usually won't print from upper tray

When I open the bottom tray and try to print a single sheet from the upper tray, it often prints the first page, but the second does not print but flashes red. When I bring up "printers" it says "ready", so it has taken the information from the computer. When I hold "Go" a long time to cancel all documents, nothing happens, still flashes red.

T652n 202.03 paperjam

1Open the upper-front cover and remove the toner cartridge.2
Look into the printer. Remove any jammed sheets of paper that you find there.

  • If the print job only consisted of this one page, reinstall the toner cartridge and close the front cover. Press the pattlnk_10162008_2247-select_button.jpg button to clear the error, and then try printing again.

  • If the print job consisted of more than one page, confirm the entire paper path is clear before printing again. Do the following:

    1. Remove the top paper tray ('Tray 1').
    2. Remove any jammed or partially-fed sheets of paper you find here, then reinstall the tray.
    3. Go around to the back of the machine and open the upper-rear cover. Remove any jammed sheets of paper you find, then close the cover.
    4. Once you have confirmed that the entire paper path is clear, reinstall the toner cartridge and close the front cover.
    5. Press the pattlnk_10162008_2247-select_button.jpg button to clear the error, and then try printing again.

  • If you cannot locate any jammed paper under the toner cartridge, then check the rest of the printer for any jammed paper. Do the following:

    • Remove the top paper tray ('Tray 1') and look for any jammed or partially-fed sheets of paper.
    • If you do not find any jammed pages there, reinstall the tray and go around to the back of the machine. Open the upper-rear cover and look there.
    • If the entire paper path appears to be clear, close the rear cover and power off the printer. Reinstall the toner cartridge and close the front cover. Power the printer back on. If a 200 error continues on power up, a sensor in the printer may be malfunctioning. This will require a service call to correct the issue. Black dots/blotches on the sides of printed sheets - whats is the cause and how t to fix it

If you have random blotches on both sides of the sheet, your printer probably needs cleaning, especially in the fuser section. If the fuser is difficult to get at, here's a good cheat developed for HP LaserJet 6 printers: Use a basic graphics program such as Microsoft Paint to draw three solid black rectangles about 2.5" top to bottom, going all the way across the paper (the space in between is not critical - the key is that you go as close to edge-to-edge as you can get). Print out this sheet.

Put the sheet back in the paper tray so it will print on the blank side (usually printed side up). Open up a quick text processor (Notepad in Windows). Type a single space, then print (some text editors won't print a document with no data in it). Dirt in the fuser will get stuck to the black areas on your cleaning sheet. Test your work by printing another copy of " ". Repeat with a new cleaning sheet if necessary.
