How to change system default voice

Go to your control panel and select "Speech". Under Voice Selection, you can select the voice you want to use. By default, there is only one voice available in Windows XP called Microsoft Sam. Additional voices can be downloaded from various Web sites.

For more info you can read this page.

My Dell Dimension E510 cannot pick up any voice recording from my various mic inputs. I have fiddled with volumes of each respective input (line in, rear mic, mic jack) to no avail, and when I try to use...

This sounds like you have a voice morphing program installed. A morph program is useful for distorting your voice and special effects, but it also takes over your mic controls. Go to the control panel and choose sounds and audio devices, then look for the default device under sound recording and make sure your record device is the same model as your sound device and that it says INPUT. Another problem occurs if you right click your little sound/audio icon on the taskbar and choose open volume control then left click. Do that now and choose, options, then properties. Now on mixer device, choose one that says input. The white window on the bottom of that panel will show you several devices, check mark them all and click ok. Now manually select MIC as your default sound input device and close then try again.

Your default recording device is still set on the built-in mic.

In Microsoft XP...
Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel and double-click the Sounds and Audio Devices tab
Select the Voice tab and choose the the appropriate item in the Voice recording Default device pop-up menu.

In Vista, choose Start> Control Panel > Sounds and click on the Recording tab.

In both instances, choose your external mic as the default.
Windows XP 1 Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel and double-click theSounds and Audio Devicescontrol panel.
2 Select the Voice tab and choose the the appropriate item in the Voice recording Default device pop-up menu.

Changing Microsoft default voice

Use the Speech Engine Configurations tab of the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in for Microsoft Speech Server (MSS) 2004 to change the default voice used by applications for text-to-speech (TTS) processing, or to specify an application-specific TTS voice.
This is the voice that callers hear when an application must synthesize speech output rather than use prerecorded prompts. For more information, see the section on the prompt engine in the topic Producing Speech Output.
To modify the default voice
  1. Open the MMC Administration console. (For instructions,
To open the MMC Administration console for MSS
    1. Click Start.
    2. Select All Programs, Microsoft Speech Server 2004, and then click MSS Management Console.
Note If you do not have Administrator rights on the computer you are using to open MMC, you will be prompted to enter a valid Administrator ID and password)

  2. In the console tree, expand the applicable group.
  3. In the details pane, double-click the computer running SES to open the SES properties page.
  4. Click the Speech Engine Configurations tab.
  5. Under Engine Configurations:, select DefaultVoice.
  6. In the Engine Name drop-down list, select the voice to use for all applications by default.
