What version of Windows are you using?

Your hard drive is most likely not formatted. In Windows Vista, you will need to:

1. Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button My WD 10EADS-00L5BI shows up in the BIOS, but not - getopencontent.aspx?assetid=4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. In the Navigation pane, under Storage, click Disk Management.
3. Right-click an unallocated region on your hard disk, and then click New Simple Volume.
4. In the New Simple Volume Wizard, click Next.
5. Type the size of the volume you want to create in megabytes (MB) or accept the maximum default size, and then click Next.
6. Accept the default drive letter or choose a different drive letter to identify the partition, and then click Next.
7. In the Format Partition dialog box, do one of the following:
• If you don't want to format the volume right now, click Do not format this volume, and then click Next.
• To format the volume with the default settings, click Next.
8. Review your choices, and then click Finish.

Windows Explorer makes folders that are not needed? How do I delete them when they say write-protected?

Chances are your Windows Explorer is set to show hidden files. Some are write protected because they're crucial to your OS's functionality.

Hope this helps!

I copied some videos to my Elite WD. Can I just open this drive to view what is there without going to the WD software?

Yes, you can view the content of your hard drive by going to Windows Explorer, or My Computer. You can launch Windows Explorer by pressing the Win key (has the Windows logo, between the CTRL and ALT buttons, bottom left side of your keyboard) and the E-key, so that's Win+E keys pressed together. Once Explorer opens just click on the hard drive's icon from the left side of the new window, it should be labeled MyBook.

WD 10EADS external USB 1TB HDD. Using XP windows explorer, selecting drive returns a comment that it is not formatted. Using Windows98 explorer gives brief correct directory display but there are...

Sounds like you may have a corrupted drive or that the file catalogue on the drive is corrupted. Try accessing the drive on a different machine, if you can suspect the usb ports or the cable from the drive, if you still cannot gain access, the drive is corrupted. There are people who can extract the data off a corrupted drive but this is expensive so if you dont really need the data on the drive, reformat and start again..

Installed a 250GB WD Scorpio and it shows as a 130GB drive

make sure the laptop will handle a drive bigger than 130 gig. if not make two partitions when you set it up, bios wont see it but usually windows will. also, sometimes ive found that if i delete the partition a few times it eventually reads right. dont know why but have done it that way several times. you can also download a diskmanager program from thier website which makes an overlay if your bios wont support a 250.

Cannot retrieve data from my 500G WD

Hi,

For your 2 queries:
1. The clicking sound is indicative of a hardware failure or the start of one. Considering having it fixed would simply be buying a bit of time and prolonging the inevitable.  The drive even when repaired tends to be suspect and would defeat its very purpose;

2. You can perform the reformat yourself. If the WD would show as a removable drive in your Windows Explorer, right clicking on the assigned drive letter would give you the option to Format it.

Alternately, it might be to your advantage to simply replace the WD. In some instances, it is also possible to just replace the actual HD inside the enclosure.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
