Question about Dell 3300MP Multimedia Projector

1 Answer

I have a dell 3300mp projector who's warranty has expired. When I turn the unit on, I get a lamp over heating message on the lcd and lamp does not light up. Have tried turning unit off, taking all cables including power cable, off and pressing on button for at least 30 seconds and then trying to power unit back on. That has not worked. Tried other solutions such as taking out lamp and pressing a metal switch (which they claim is a reset button). Nothing has worked. I see this problem is somewhat common. I have not bought a new lamp because I see others have tried a new lamp and that has not worked. Can you help.

I will try a new lamp. But as far as the air flow ducts cleaning. Do I need to take the projector apart, or can I clean them from outside.

The most common cause of early projector lamp failure is overheating. To get the best life and brightness from your projector lamp you must ensure that all filters and airflow ducts in the projector are free of dust. These should be checked periodically to prevent overheating.

When the lcd on this projector gives out the error code lamp over heating the projector lamp has already failed due to overheating. As stated the most common cause of this is dust build up. Unfortunately the only solution to this is a costly replacement. The lamp cost is around $300. There is no other possible solution once this code shows in the LCD.

You can use the following link from Dell to troubleshoot your problem and confirm my diagnoses if you wish

I wish there was another more cost effective solution to your problem but unfortunately this is not the case.

Unfortunately this is precisely the problem with this particular model. The Dell 3300MP is being flagged up as a particularly unreliable model and Dell are remaining extremely silent when it comes to multilple users reporting problems with the unit overheating. Of note the manual for this model is remarkably silent when it comes to maintenance issues such as dust prevention.

This is even more remarkable considering the widely acknowledged issue of dust prevention as a maintenance and longevity factor in lamp life with other manufacturers. Given the the expense that is involved in replacing these lamps Dell are showing a remarkable level of disinterest.

A simple mechanism is to periodically use a hoover from outside and point it in around the vents in the unit to prevent dust build up inside the airflow chambers. Some colleagues of mine have used a technique of removing the lamp from the unit and using compressed air to rid the unit of dust.

However to be brutally honest with you given that this unit is now out of warranty and the fact that it has a known issue with airflow, I could not recommend that you spend $300 dollars on a new bulb as I fear this too will be shortlived.

I personally would put the $300 towards a new unit from a different manufacturer and I would use some comparison and review sites on the internet to identify a good reliable manufacturer/model.

If the unit is not long out of warranty you might consider sending an email to Dell to see if they would give any goodwill gesture towards the purchase of a new bulb. In the absence of this I would move on to another manufacturer to save further heartache.

    Hope this helps.

I have dell 3300mp,when I turn the power on it makes a very loud noise. It does not make the sound in standby or cool down. It does work and display a signal okay, but it is very loud. Sound like a fan?,...

The main fan that cools the lamp is mostly high speed when the unit is running. when it shuts down it slows the fan down, until it stops in standby. So the noise is only really loud when it is showing a picture.

try setting the fan to eco mode (slower running) and see if the noise is acceptable. If it is still too loud then you will have to replace it. Have a look at the fan and see if any of the plastic blades are missing.

How old is your unit and or how many hours are on the lamp?
As the lamps age they run hotter and it could need replacing.
If so, buy just the bulb instead of the lamp assy and install it yourself.

No lit / projected image even with a new bulb!

Let me add...

I had one 3300MP and removed/replaced the bulb to dust off as it was overheating. There is a small metal like switch that resets the bulb replacement (physical switch - take a good look) -- This helped to reset the first time I did this, but doesn't reset the hours on the chip.

However, since this bulb was problematic for me, I have done this a couple of times and since has stopped powering the bulb now. So, thinking it was the bulb, I replaced the bulb, -- No good... So, thinking it was the projector, I bought a new/refurbished one on ebay -- tested the NEW bulb - NO GOOD. now I have TWO PROJECTORS, THREE BULBS and NOTHING THAT WORKS...
