Re: Laptop monitor goes black

It sounds like your display's backlight is going bad. Depending how handy you are, you may be able to replace just the LCD, they might have new or used LCDs on E-Bay.

Ve an acer travelmate 4001LCi how do i check motherboard if there is a problem with computer when i power on? all i get is black screen, please help..

Diagnose the problem one step at a time.

1) Does the Power On LED light come one, and the Harddrive activity LED flashes?
Hear the fan running?

Attach an external monitor to the laptop. See if you get graphics on the external monitor.

If so the problem is in the Display Assembly. More on that in a minute.

If Not, the problem is the motherboard. The graphics chip may be faulty.
(If so the usual culprit is a loose mounting of graphics chip to motherboard )

You can use a VGA monitor for an external monitor. Another term is CRT monitor. Looks like a small TV.
OR, alternatively if you have an LCD flat screen with a VGA monitor cable, you can use it.

1) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF. Plug the VGA cable of the monitor into the laptop's VGA connector.
(Back of laptop)

Turn the VGA monitor on, let it warm up. Now turn the laptop on.

No display shown on the external monitor?
Press, and hold down on the Fn key, (Bottom Left), and tap once on the F5 key.
(Display Toggle-Over Key)

Still no?
Tap once more.
There are 3 options;

1) Just the display screen of the laptop
2) The display screen of the laptop, AND the external monitor
3) Just the external monitor

A) Display on external monitor?
Problem with the Display Assembly. (Acer = LCD Module)

The Display Assemblies main parts are;
1) The Display Cover. The cover that surrounds the LCD screen (Acer = LCD Cover)

2) The Display Bezel. The thin plastic frame in front of the LCD screen. Looks like a picture frame.
(Acer = LCD Bezel)

3) The LCD screen assembly. {An LCD screen is composed of layers} (Acer = LCD Panel)

4) The screen Inverter circuit board

5) LCD Panel brackets (2)

6) Video Cable (Acer = LCD Cable)

7) Hinges {2}
Plus various screws.

An LCD screen does not produce light. It needs an additional light source.
The additional light source is a Backlight.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

An Inverter is used to convert the power from the laptop, for the LCD screen, and the Backlight.

90 Percent of the Time the Problem is the Inverter

Acer TravelMate 4000 series of Notebook PC - Service Manual (Free)

Scroll down to the Travelmate heading.
Go down to the 4th line (Begins with 3230), and scroll across to 4000.
Left-click on 4000.

After you click on the file name (4000) it may take up to 30 seconds before the first page comes up.
It may also take additional time for the file to fully download.

B) No display on external monitor?
Problem with the motherboard.
Most generally the graphics chipset.

(ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 chipset,

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit, )

The graphics chipset is mounted to the motherboard via a BGA surface mount.
(Ball Grid Array, )

To explain a BGA surface mount;
The older Intel Pentium 4 processors that used a Socket 478 processor socket, had contact pins on the bottom of the processor.

A chipset using the BGA surface mount does not have contact pins.
It has Solder Balls in place of the pins.

There is no socket with socket holes. There are Copper Pads.

The chipset is set into place with the Solder Balls lining up on the Copper Pads.
Then a specified temperature, and specified length of time is used to melt the solder balls.
This solders the chipset to the Copper Pads, which in turn solders the chipset to the motherboard.

Excess heat, due to the laptop is overheating, can partially re-melt the solder connections made, and cause a poor contact.

May be caused by the laptop is dirty inside, and the cooling capacity of the cooling components, has dropped tremendously.

May be due to a poor cooling system design in regards to the graphics chipset.

The cooling system may be adequate enough to keep the Processor within it's specified temperature operating range, (Thermal Limit), but NOT adequate enough to keep both, Processor AND graphics chipset cool.

Using the HP Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC, this video gives information on the problem in more detail,

My travelmate 6460 it is working but can't see anythng on the screen please help

To make sure what is really wrong we need to break down couple of things, have you tried connecting a external source such as to a monitor or a tv via s-video or vga. If it is able to display to the external source then there is something wrong with your screen. Now is it completely dead and you cannot see anything or are you able to see something but the display lights are not litting the display. If that is so, then your backlit is dead and you will need to replace the entire screen. In my honest opinion if that is the case I recommend you to by a new laptop, because parts/labor cost would cost more then your medium powered new laptop.

Screen problems on Acer Aspire 5740

I don't know that it is a common fault with this specific model, but laptops in general have this issue mostly due to a dying LCD power inverter. It is typicaly located at the bottom of the LCD screen and costs between $30 - $75 dollars for the part, and usually $75-$150 for someone to replace. If you like the laptop it is usually worth it to have replaced. You can also hook up a monitor to the VGA port on the laptop and then go into your display control panel and enable 2nd monitor to use it instead of your laptop lcd.

Hi this is prince here from Bangladesh. i have a laptop that is acer travel mate 420. a few days ago its display is not working properly. some times it turn into various color. so what can i do?

Hi Prince, has your laptop experienced a squeeze or fall recently? I have a few suggestions. Plug another monitor into the VGA or DVI connection on your laptop. See if you are getting the same problem. If everything is working fine on the external monitor you would have eliminated the drivers being the problem. I suggest getting the LCD display changed. If your laptop is under warranty, you can get this done for free. However, if it is not under warranty you may have to replace it either yourself or take it to a local Acer specialist. If you chose to install the new display yourself, there are handy tutorials on removing and installing the screen on the Acer website. I have noticed that many times the Acer TravelMate Notebooks have experienced display issues. I hope you get your problem resolved soon.
Thanks for using!!

Acer travelmate 2440 theres power only the screen its pure black.

Try reseating the RAM modules first. The RAM may be faulty or reseating to make proper electrical connection. Get the RAM tested in another laptop or at your friendly computer shop.
Can you get into the BIOS configuration?
Did you power up the monitor first then the laptop? This method will divert the video information to the external video port first automatically.
If you don't get an image on the monitor and the hard drive doesn't appear to be spinning, then you could have a faulty motherboard.

Wireless network connection not connected how do you switch it on

There is a physical switch on the front of the laptop. Should see 2 of them next to each other. It's the one on the right. This should enable the wireless on the laptop.

Acer Travelmate 6291 LCD monitor problem

Your concern is a typical problem with LCD displays/monitors. There could possibly be three (3) reasons why it is behaving as you have posted.
1. Backlight/Inverter problem;
2. LCD panel problem;
3. Video card problem.

You can do initial diagnosis by:
a. connect the laptop to an external monitor. Using the Fn + F? keys, activate the external monitor to be the default display. If it works, you have eliminated the possibility of the video card having a problem. If it likewise did not display anything or blanks out after sometime, then you have just confirmed that it is the video card that is a problem.

If you have ruled out the video card (using above procedure), you can proceed determining if it is an LCD panel problem or backlight/inverter problem.

To determine if it is a backlight/inverter problem, run the laptop normally even without a display. Let it boot and run through its startup sequence even if you can not see anything. Using a flashlight, shine a light obliquely to the face of the LCD display. if you can see some semblance of your desktop albeit dark, then you have just confirmed that it is the backlight/inverter. If even with the aid of a flashlight, the display s completely blank, then it is possible that the LCD display panel is defective. In some cases it is the flexible flat cable that is at fault.

With any of the aforementioned possible problems, opening the unit is required. This would need familiarity with electronic components and circuitry, use of a DVM and perhaps even a soldering iron. Should you not be comfortable doing this, it would probably be to your best advantage to seek the services of a qualifiedly professional.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Welcome to Vista. Windows Vista is automatically set up to power down after you have left it alone for too long. If you press the power button everything should be fine. Otherwise tell me what happens.
