Between the freezer and fresh food compartment is where the evaporator coils are. Frost free refrigerators aren't really frost free at all. Every 12 hours or 24 hours, a timer turns on a set of heating coils in the evaporator to melt the ice on them. If your refrigerator is otherwise functioning normally (normal cooling), it could be that you simply felt the divider it when the unit was self-defrosting.

Most refrigerators go through the defrost cycle unnoticed. When the cycle starts depends on when you plug in or turn on the refrigerator. If you'd prefer to change the time of your defrost cycle, simply unplug the refrigerator for an hour or two then plug it back in. Every hour it's unplugged will delay the defrost cycle one hour. To avoid having to remove food from the refrigerator, you might want to do this over several days, but it's cumulative so each time you unplug it for whatever length of time, it further delays the defrost cycle that length of time.

Your refrigerator has no idea what time it is (unless it's an electronic model with a built-in clock), so setting its timer to self-defrost in the middle of the night is an exercise in trial-and-error.

The other alternative... That the heater is turned on all the time... Would DEFINITELY affect the cooling capacity of the refrigerator and you'd notice that WAY before you'd notice the heat coming from the freezer/refrigerator compartment wall.

HOT SPOT IN FRONT DIVIDER BETWEEN FRIDGE AND FREEZER

Greg,
That is usually a heating element that is used to prevent condensation from developing in that area. It should cycle on and off and be slightly warm, but not get real hot. Check around your controls and see if there is a switch for something like Energy control or something like that, the exact term is escaping my memory, and you might be able to turn it off. Hope this helps!

Hi.. feel the dividing rdge between fridge and freezer.. is it warm?.. chances are that the little fan at the back of the fridge freezer that helps cool the compressor, has snagged own it's own wire... it's a weak fan, like you get in a computer, but it does a lot of work.. without it, the coolent does not do it's job, which results in your device not cooling things properly

The divider that seperates the freezer from the fridge get hot to the touch, heats up the fridge door gasket

Hi, Welcome to FixYa.

I`ll start by letting you know first the heat between the doors is normal...to a degree, and done by design to help prevent moisture along the "breaker strip"/divider.

If all else appears fine, temp. Ok, fans running, no significant frost build up on freezer back wall, it's likely nothing to be concerned about.

**Just be sure the condensor fan isn't jammed and still turning.** The fan at the back next to the compressor.

The amount of heat can be determined by several factor's such as,

1) temperature setting - lower ( colder ) the temperature is set the more the run time the hotter the strip.

2) The ambient temperature - hotter the environment the more the unit runs to compensate, hence the hotter the strip.

3) The amount of "fresh" content added to the unit ( especially freezer section if unfrozen items added ) - new items add a lot of warmth thus demanding the unit to run more to remove this heat (btu`s or british thermal unit`s )causing the strip to be hotter.

4) Build up of dust & dirt on the condensor coils - this also causes the unit to run excessively which in turn makes for more heat on this strip.

These are all things which can and do determine the amount of heat between the doors.
Another factor to always consider is of course If it is hot where you live the unit may just be running more to compensate as with other factors I mentioned.

Hope this answer's your question and let me know if I can assist you further. Thank's for coming to "fixya" and good luck moving forward.

Wall dividing fridge from freezer is very hot to the touch

You either have obstructed coils (lots o dust) under the fridge or the fan that is supposed to draw air across them has ceased to work. Check the coils and clean as necessary, and check the fan. Maybe you will get lucky and find something caught in it. If the fan is not working, leave the back cover off the fridge and put a small window or box fan back there until you can get the fan replaced. The fan will keep the fridge running for you in the meantime.

Divider between the fridge and freezer is hot to the touch, only from the outside the inside walls of both the freezer and fridge is cold, but the outside facing you as you open the door divider is very...

This is usually normal for these units it can depen on how long the unit is running in a cooling mode.
the other thing to check is the condensor fan in the bottom back side of the fridge and make sure it is running if it is not the it needs to be replaced this will also cause alot of heat on the fromt of the unit

Divider between freezer and fridge is hot to the touch

That is not a problem, it is designed to use "waste heat" from the cooling system to warm this area to prevent condensation from forming there without having to use the extra energy required if an electric heater were used. It will be noticeably warmer while the compressor is running and has been running for a time than if the compressor has been off for a period of time.

Freezer running, ice maker not producing, hot in middle divder.

The dividing section should be warm, to keep unit from sweating. (by design). Cleaning under the refrigerator was what cooled it down. You cleaned the condenser. The condenser allows the refrigerent to cool down. When it was dirty, the condenser could not get enough air to cool down.
