USQ1102 pump gets power, buzzes, trips breaker

USQ1102 pump gets power, buzzes for 10 seconds and then trips breaker. Connections look ok, minor corrosion, I am curious about the start capacitor & what looks like a safety switch attached to it. Any ideas?

The motor-start capacitor is bad. This is a very common problem. It can be easily and cheaply fixed by replacing the capacitor. Replacements are usually less than $10.

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEIv5ClLqXg for a step=by=step guide.

When you have the capacitor in hand, check the model# which is printed on it. Alternatively, you can Google the motor brand & model to find the parts list which will identify the right one. Then Google the part number, to find a seller.

I had the same symptoms: pump runs, buzzes loudly, trips breaker. I puzzled over it for some time. The other respondents are correct: it probably is the capacitor. In my case it wasn't. Turns out that I had moved the motor and somehow the 115/230 Volt switch got set to 115V even though I was connecting to 230V. Before screwing around with the capacitor, first check to see if the internal switch is set to the correct voltage- that is, the voltage you are sending to the motor. It takes about 5 seconds.

its a saftey device, called a "thermodisk". It's purpose is to turn off the heating coil or stop gas flow in the event of over heating. If the thermodisk is bad, trying to over ride it (trying to get it to run) will trip the breaker. Its about 10 bucks and easy to replace.

Typically a bad magnetron. They draw a lot of power when they go bad and trip the breakers or fuses inside the micro. Very fixable

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

A typical pool pump motor is going to last about 10 – 12 years. A corroded frame and tripping breakers suggests it is at the end of its service life.

It short, it needs to be replaced...for a replacement motor quote, please get as much info off the nameplate as you can and also note what brand the pump it attaches to is and contact us thru www.arrowmotor.net or www.arrowpools.net at your convenience.

Based on what you’ve posted I’d guess it is either an AOS-USQ1102 or AOS-UST1102. Costs for those would be $177.10 OR $172.00 respectively. Your message using the contact feature on our site will confirm which is the correct one.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Intermittent breaker tripping

Have your installer check your wire connections first. These use a lot of power in turn the connections get hot leading to oxzidation leading to more heat...A vicous cycle. Other than that 40a sounds a little light depending on elect run and load on heater.

Pump starts and immediately trips breaker

if it buzzes but doesnt actually turn then check the starting capacitor .. when bad, the motor wont know which way to turn and will just buz and get hot until a thermal breaker or external overload breaker trips .. that should happen in about 5 or 10 seconds .. the same thing will happen if the pump is jammed .. make sure it turns freely ..

Not pumping...not tripping breaker...making an electrical noise like it is trying to start.. a buzzing noise for a few seconds and then stops without tripping breaker...turned off breaker...

Remove pump and check for something stuck in the impellor assuming that it has one. You didn't say what you are working with. So, sounds like something clogged or stuck in what ever it is that you are pumping. If that is not the case then you have a bad pump motor.

ASSUMING THIS IS SINGLE PHASE HAVE YOU CHECKED THE CAPACITORS. START CAPACITOR COULD BE BAD OR BURNT LEAD. HAVE YOU MADE SURE THE PUMP IS NOT LOCKING UP. POINTS IN THE PRESSURE SWITCH LOOK GOOD. HOPE THIS HELPS, JODY
