Question about Astoria Divina SAE-1 Espresso Machine

1 Answer

I am getting steam and or air in water line feeding my machine.

I have a manual lever style duel head Astoria Machine Made in 1968 or 1969. I am using it in a self contained (using water tanks) drive-thru espresso shop. I am getting air and some times steam in the water line feeding the machine. This causes the water pump to cycle on and stay on or in extreme cases the machine loses pressure and will not steam milk or make shots. I have replaced all the water lines feeding into the machine with the thought that the machine could be sucking air from an old water line fitting this is not the case I still have the the problem.

Try adding an accumulator in line after the shurflo pump, that will assist the machine.

One of the lines is for pump pressure and lines up with the side that reads 0-15, that would be the one leading to the bottom of the machine. The other side is for steam pressure which reads 0-3 that is connected to the boiler. As for the grouphead if the screen is in place you should be able to use a 5mm allen wrench if that is what the screw head is, which is someone changed it from a flat head that is what they put in.

Has the machine been cleaned / descaled? Coffee machines become clogged with mineral scale deposits from the water. Some folks use citric acid , about two tablespoons /qt of water, and some folks use white vinegar, 1/2 & 1/2. Place the solution in the machine as if you were making coffee. It may take a few cleanings if there is a lot of deposits. After cleaning dissolve two tbsp of baking soda in a quart of water and run through machine to neutralize the acid.

Blinking lights in Astoria sae

Water is not flowing through the flowmeters. It could be a blockage in the line or the wheel is damaged or the flowmeter head is damaged. But the blinking lights indicate a water flow problem.

It sounds like the water pump is not doing its thing or the machine cannot get water, either blocked filter or water line.

We need to increase the hot water temperature, how

Depending on the model, if using a manual knob for the tea valve(same kind of setup as the steam) then you will have to turn up the p.stat. If it has an electronic button then remove the front top panel and look on the side of the solenoid you will notice a knob attached to another solenoid called an economiser valve, there should be a plus and minus sign on the knob. Reducing the amount of cold water being mixed with the hot water will increase the temperature.
