Question about Sewing Machines

Hand wheel won't turn

I replaced the belts on my Necchi 535 FA and now the hand wheel won't turn. It's like it's locked in place. The motor hums so I know it's working but won't move anything. The stop motion knob is tight so I don't think that's the problem. Please help. Thanks.

PS - This is one of the good old machines that has no electronics in it whatasoever.

The belts were replaced because they were threadbare. Can you tell me what the correct position would be for the idler pulley. I am wondering if I have it too tight. How much tension is the right amount on the belts?

If the belts were loose or removed, would the handwheel still be locked? The 535 has an adjustable idler pulley which may need getting in the optimum position.

The belts needed for this machine are very specific in size, particularly the small one. The wrong belts will not work.

Look carefully at the bracket that holds the pulley. There are two screws that hold it in place. Loosen them slightly and run the machine and the pulley bracket may move on its own to where it needs to be. If not, you must find the right spot where it is tight enough not to slip and not too tight to bind.

Necci 752 manual is needed.problem with threading and stitching

Hm, I'm not able to locate a manual but may be able to offer some suggestions.

Remove the top thread from the machine.
Use the same thread in top and bobbin.
Be sure to use a brand new needle--needs to be compatible with the thread and fabric of the project..
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Set the top tension to the midway point.
Verify the bobbin is loaded and threaded correctly and it turns the correct direction.
Pull the bobbin thread up through the fabric before taking the first stitch. It also helps to hold both thread tails in your left hand when taking the first stitches.
Test your machine and tweak the top tension until the top and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric. (Increased top tension will pull the bobbin thread up. Decreased top tension will allow the bobbin thread to pull the top thread down.)

Sorry the needle is not going down,

Needles will not go down for:
1. The lock on the hand wheel isn't locking. Try this
a. Loosen the lock like you're going to wind a bobbin.
b. Loosen screw that is on the side of the lock. (sometimes front)
c. Tighten the lock just like when you're going to sew.
d. Tighten the screw that is on the side of the lock.(sometimes front)
e. Turn hand wheel by hand. Did the needle rise and fall?
2. The drive belt isn't moving the shaft.
a. Remove the top of the sewing machine.
b. You will most likely have to remove the panel on the end where the hand wheel is.
c. Turn your hand wheel to see if the belt is moving the shaft or is it broken?
d. Replace if you need to. (look at wear). Loosen the motor.
e. Make your motor run (foot pedal) slowly. Tighten the belt by pushing on the motor while it is running. When the motor is placed at the right place the motor will be moving with very little drag. (This will need a listening ear)
f. At this point tighten motor and retest for the speed and drag.

I have a Necchi model 549. I have to hand turn the wheel in order for it to start to stitch then it will run, but as soon as I stop it needs to be hand turned again. it will not sew upholstery or heavy...

I have the same machine and have had a similar problem. My belt was just old though. You need a new belt. And once installed it must be adjusted properly for everything to work correctly. I changed and adjusted mine myself. Although Necchi parts are not available from the company any more, there are several places online that carry belts and a few other items. One is The belt shows up under Necchi 541, but it lists compatibility with our machines (549) on the order page. The size belt is 12 5/8"-- with teeth (lug type). While the belt is being changed the shaft that holds the wheel needs to be cleaned and oiled. Also clean up any excess oil in the area with a sewing machine safe cleaning fluid. Clean the plastic wheel with a little dish detergent and water on a paper towel. Oil should not be put, or remain, on any plastic parts in your machine. Not many people want to fix these machines anymore, but I love mine and will probably keep it as long as I can keep it running. Hope you see this post and get your machine running again. Win

Necchi Model 535 FA - Replaced drive belt, after running machine for approximately 5 minutes, machine locks down with motor running, motor pully burns plastic belt into.

The motor is running. That is confirmed that motor is fine. But the wires from motor has to be checked.the motor connections are getting short and this is causing the plastic belt to burn.Check the motor as well as its connection.
