SOURCE: How to remove handle from Hoover 5445-900 upright wind tunnel vacuum

Hoover.com doesn't have a manual specific to your model but there is one similar which will show how to remove the upper handle from the body.

http://www.hoover.com/pdfs/manuals/U5467900.pdf

Do you have a replacement switch? If not I believe you can buy one from Hoover (the switch and/or the upper handle assembly). Unfortunately your model isn't listed on the website, is this a new vacuum? I recommend giving them a call, that would be the easiest way.

Also remember when working with electronics to unplug the vacuum. Even when there is no power residual electricity can remain in the wires. If you feel unsure, take it to a repairman.

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: replace on/off switch on hoover vacuum

My wife picked one up on the side of the road that someone had tossed. The power switch would not turn off. I took the two bolts out of the top part of the handle, and then removed the screws along the back. This will remove the required panels to access the On/Off switch. Once I found the actual on/off button, I found it to be frozen in the "ON" position. After manipulating it for a few minutes, I got the switch to work. This machine now operates great, and I now have a Hoover :)

There is a thermal sensor in the motor which shuts power off if it gets too hot but usually it won't turn back on until it cools down. It seems you might have a defective switch

Hi My Hoover wind tunnel cyclonic stopped working when i was using it. I tried different plug even then it doesnt work . What to do??

If the motor stopped running, it most likely did because it was not being cooled, becuause something was stopping up the air flow. If you have cleaned the secondary filter out and it still stops while running, then remove the exhaust filter cartridge and try it then. If it does not stop running now, then the problem is the previous models like this had a foam filter as the exhaust filter, not a heppa cartridge filter. You will not hurt the machine by running it without the heppa cartridge. Cut a foam filter to fit to replace it. I do not think Hoover knows this yet.

I have a customer working on this problem today (Sept 2010) I have repaired machines for 30 years. This filter is meant to just catch the tiny particles from getting back into the air. However, it worked fine on the previous machines with the foam filter here instead of this Heppa cartridge.

That means that the belt is stretched and it is slipping on the motor shaft, that is why it is hot and smells like burning rubber. You need to replace the belt. Here is the correct belt you need:

If you turn the vacuum over there will be (4) screws that hold on the base cover for the roller brush. Remove the screws and the cover and you can get to the belt(s). You can get replacement belts here:

Changing belts on Hoover wind tunnel U6401

Take off the bottom plate covering the brush roll, 4 screws. There are 2 belts, if you replace both, put the V belt on 1st, then stretch the flat belt over the motor shaft, then over the bigger pulley along side the V belt.

If the belt is getting hot, then it is slipping instead of turning the brush roll. Check thge brush roll, make sure the ends are turning freely. Is the motor running ok? If it is then either the brush roll is bad, need a new belt, or something is catching the belt, not letting it move.

A clog or partial clog is what causes the motor to overheat, then a thermo protector will cut off and the motor will stop until it cools down. So either you do have a clog, in the hose or down by the brush roll. If they are clear, and the filters are clean, then maybe the thermo protector is bad and needs to be replaced.

Hoover wind tunnel vacuum cleaner shuts off during use

Check the inlet down by the brush roll to make sure it isn't clogged. If not and the hose isn't clogged, then probably the thermo protector (part #28382093) maybe bad. It is mounted near the motor. Could be motor Part #43576188. But I would suspect a clog in the inlet or hose, or the thermo protector has gone bad.
