I have the same problem and I contacted Samsung'safter-sales service. They told me it comes from a manufacturing defect of the imaging unit, but they can do nothing ! They told me yesterday : buy a new imaging unit or throw the printer and buy a new one !! The missing print areas appear only when printing black or dark areas, not on pure blue, red or yellow areas.

If it's a manufacturing defect, then surely Samsung is at fault and should rectify. I would phone them back and if unsatisfactory, threaten them with court action, but don't get aggressive with them as this will go against you and in these current financial times Samsung can't afford the hastle.

Regarding your query, it sounds like the HP Officejet 4315 printer is locked into the advanced service test mode (i.e. one of your ink cartridges is causing the issue). Remove both ink cartridges and clean thoroughly before proceeding to next step - our Inkjet411 support links are provided below to help you diagnose the issue.

2) Perform either of the 'B' procedures below to verify HP Officejet 4315 printer and ink cartridge electrical performance.
B.1. Perform Tap 43 test: [for most older HP Officejet printer models with keypads]
1. Press * and # keys at same time
2. Enter 1234 (or 124). The 'Underware' menu should be displayed.
3. Using left/right arrow keys, navigate to Special Reports/Reports Menu (......or 'System Menu' / 'Information Menu' if Reports Menu is not available). Select Enter.
4. Using left/right arrow keys, navigate to 'Extended Self Test'.
5. Select Enter to print test print - evaluate test print. If excessive nozzles are missing from the stair step pattern, then perform cartridge cleaning to correct.
6. Using left/right arrow keys, navigate to 'print-mech button tap' menu.
7. Select Ok ('code = 0' will be displayed); click and hold Right Arrow until 'code = 43' is displayed. NOTE: enter 'code = 41' if 'code =43' does not activate the diagnostic print report.
8. Select Ok. Within one minute the Tap 43/41 diagnostic test pattern should be initiated and print. The test page prints.
--- Providing the color cartridge is partially functioning, the diagnostic test print will be printed (this is a forced service print test which is mainly used for the evaluation of ink cartridge electrical health). A good HP 21/27/56 black cartridge should display 416 good nozzles (26x16 grid), while a good HP 22/28/57/58 color ink cartridge should show 300 good nozzles (10x10 color grid). B.2. Print Diagnostic Self-Test Page (only available on select HP printer models):
1. Press the Setup Button located on the bottom center of the control panel, beneath the LED readout.
2. Press 2 to select "Print Reports"
3. Press 6 to select "Self-Test Report" on the number keypad
4. Examine the resulting self-test page that prints. There should be lines extending all the way across the page in black, yellow, cyan and magenta. A missing black line indicates a problem with the black or photo cartridge. Faded, streaked or missing lines in the other colors indicates a problem with the color ink cartridge. First perform an observation of the printers compartibilty to color printing. For example, the printer ought to have been manufactured to capture color pixles to provide resource request in multimedia. usually is possible to have one printer that has several ink location areas to either install color media or dark ink media. It's like the ink is not flowing at the nuzzle! To check this you take some tissue paper, fold it so that is is a little padded. Press the black ink cartridge nuzzle (this is the bottom part where the ink comes from) on it. If black in is flowing well, the tissue ahould come out blotted with black ink. If it does not, it means either the ink is blocked or the is finished. Try this with every black ink cartridge you want to test.
If see the blot of black and the problem persists, clean the "electronic" contact side of the cartridge with tissue soaked in a bit of methylated spirit. Do the same to the area it makes contact with inside the printer.
I see you don't have much knowledge about printers. It always helps to know something about your printer.
It seem you have a color printer. Usually a color printer has two cartridges. Black cartridge and color cartridge. The color cartridge usually contains three colors; cyan, yellow and magenta.
If the black cartridge is empty, you won't see black text in the printed paper. Print a small photo and see. If it has all the colors, but looks dull (without proper black color), that means only the black cartridge is empty. If it is greenish, the magenta ink is missing. Generally orange colored printouts suggest cyan is missing. Likewise, purple color means the yellow ink is missing.
If you installed the printer properly using the CD from the printer manufacturer, you will be notified when the cartridge is empty or close to run out of ink. But if Windows automatically installed your printer, then the system won't give such information.
From the information you have supplied, I believe your blck cartridge is empty or missing.
Oh, I almost forgot to say, some manufactures sell some printers (for example some Canon Pixma models) with only the color cartridge.
Switch on the printer and open the printer cover. The cartridges will move to the middle. You can check whether the black cartridge is missing.

The nozzles have gone bad...it needs to be serviced or replaced...i appreciate your efforts yoy put in to fix the problem thats best we can do after all its a machine.if the printer is in warranty contact the manufacturer.
I'm sorry, but there is no white ink in the cartridges in this printer, and there are no printers I know of by any manufacturer that have white ink to do what you're wanting to do.
All I can suggest is these two things:
Go to a local printing shop and see if they can do this for you. I used to work at an Insty-Prints and they could do thermographed ink (which means the ink is slightly raised, like you see on some business cards), and probably have white or light grey ink. They may be able to do this for you.
Alternatively, you can print it on your printer, but you'll have to use white card stock and have the printer print all the black (and leave the white areas white). This will use a lot of black ink so if you have a lot of these to print, it might actually be easier and cheaper (considering the cost of ink) to again go to a print shop in your area.
I have the same problem. I just re-installed all ink cartridges into my printer from the first actual cartridges given to me with the printer and the black ink doesn't work. I contacted HP and they told me that I needed to change my black ink, after I already told them that I have tried 2 new ink cartridges in the system. I went out and bought another one thinking that this would fix the problem, and it didn't. I contacted HP again and I was told that it was the printer that was broken. The actual black ink section was faulty. Since it was a year and a month since I bought the product it was not under warranty, so nothing could be done but to buy another faulty piece of merchandise from HP. I could also service it, but that was never given a price tag. If you want my opinion don't purchase anything from HP again, I know I won't.
I heard you can get the 3310 to do a pump up the tubes cycle but i don't know how to make it do it. Pressing the ok and cancel buttons when you power up didn't work for my machine. Which has too died a inkless black death!
