Question about Lowrance GlobalMap 3500C GPS Receiver

2 Answers

Can't turn it off, it flickers and crackels. It worked ok about 3 weeks ago for about an hour, then could not find the antenna. I parked the boat and about a week later, I noticed it was turned on (sort of) and was making a crackeling noise. I could not turn it off by normal means.

Thanks, I will try to find a torex driver small enough to take the thing apart. And go from there.

  • bob9388 Jun 27, 2009

I need to go to radio shack for the driver.

  • bob9388 Jun 27, 2009

    No swelled or loose capacitors.

  • bob9388 Jun 27, 2009

Any other thoughts? Is this a replace rather than fix situation?

  • bob9388 Jun 27, 2009

I don't understand how this site works. If you go off the air, does it tell me and am I responding to a computer that is turned off?

  • bob9388 Jun 27, 2009

I guess you are gone - I am turning this thing off and going to work on some other projects.

  • bob9388 Jun 28, 2009

Of course I unpluged the unit. It is on my desk and the boat and power are 105 miles away. I will power it up with the back off after looking for a bad solder connection. If that does not do it, I may just deep six the thing. Thanks for your input.

You can't turn it off maybe the switch is faulty or the unit is freeze or hang .You can turn it off by taking off the power supply connected by unplugging it to the source.Flickers and crackels this the indication of cold solder.. A cold solder joint is where a lead of a component is not soldered at a high enough temperature and results in a bad electrical connection which can respond to physical shock and thermal stress.Due to time, heat, use, some solder joints would be cracked or loose. It is possible that the cold solder is still minimally connected . When the receiver unit turns on heat would be generated which would be sufficient to further loosen up the solder joint to the point it no longer provides electrical contact. A solder joint may also be broken or cracked because the receiver was dropped or hit. Look on the front and back of the board along the defective circuit to see any components that look like they are not soldered effectively or the solder connection is cracked or broken. A cold solder joint looks dull and/or bulging unlike the smooth and shiny normal solder joints. Its better you resolder all components parts joints of power supply circuit board and also inaudio section.Thats is the best solution for this kind of problem its proven of all electronic technician

I believe there is either a bad capacitor causing a mis configuration in the unit's firmware. Check for any swelled or loose capacitors and have them replaced. Also you may want to do a system upgrade

check the brake fluid level, if its low, it may be time to check the brakes for wear. As your brakes are used up, the fluid goes down and turns the light on.

Hi Kldeaton,

If you can do it, try your car mount in the house, as long as you can supply power via the car plug (12-volts DC). If it does the same thing as the home kit, then you more than likely have an intermittent antenna connection on your home antenna.

Also, check the location of your antenna vs any obstructions, such as trees. You may have the reception worked out so that you have signal from the antenna, but it is "breaking up" from a connector or cable short or open condition. Check the coax for any chaffing also. Let me know if you need more help. Thanks.
