It's an older unit that i just tried. When i plug

I got a used Back-UPS RS 800 battery backup unit.

It's an older unit and when i plug it in, it beeps 4 times every minute or so. I can't seem to make it stop beeping. Is this an indication that the battery is no good in it? What else could make it beep like this?

Try installing the software that is included with the unit. If you didn't get the software, I believe you can download it for free from APC's website. The software will typically give you the status of the batteries and let you know if you need to replace them. If you can't get the software, take the batteries out (keep note of the wiring configuration) and test each battery using a DC voltmeter. The batteries should read around 13.5 volts DC. If they are around or below 11.5v DC, it's time for new batteries. This model, if its the black 110v version, requires the RBC32 which can be found at: http://www.batteryinternational.com/apc-rbc32--f2.html

Good luck and I hope I could help.

Unit won't turn on

If the overload indicator is lit, the most likely cause is there are more devices plugged into the UPS than is can support. Try unplugging all devices but one and see if the unit functions normally.

You can then try to figure out how many is too many.

My electronics' power cords will not plug in to many of the sockets of the battery backup

I know that feeling

Resolve it with a universal adaptor like you take away when you go overseas.
Some units have the plug you want +4 standard plugs in a bank.

or buy a standard plug block that suits your units and change the plug to the configuration of the APC You can buy those plugs at most Tandy or computer stores and wire them up yourself

it seems that the inverter circuit of your UPS is dying. the solution here is you have to open up the UPS and check the inverter circuit. to make easier, check the power mosfet if its leaking.

Less back up time

I found the following on APC's web-site for the APC Back-UPS, this will hopefully fix the problem:
You can also perform a manual runtime calibration. This could be done if you have changed your equipment load or battery. Stop the PowerChute software from running; disconnect the serial cable between the computer and UPS. Next unplug the UPS from the wall and let it run on battery until it reaches low battery. Once it reaches low battery plug it back into the wall outlet and let it recharge. Recharge time can take up to 4 hours.

Battery Backup/Surge Protector Question

Considering the low draw of power you intend for the UPS it will work well. I have two monitors on a strip plugged into UPS along with desktop, routers and modems, UPS handles all well, it's just shortens battery backup times. Have had to power down from outages several times without any probs.
