Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I am trying to replace the hard drive in my compaq evo n1020v. The problem I am having is that when I turn on the computer, it doesn't seem to be booting from the windows CD. It just sits there and does nothing. I can hear the CD spinning, but nothing is happening. Anybody have any suggestions? The screen just sits there with a cursor blinking in the top left corner. No windows logo, no nothing. Black screen, white cursor in upper left. And I can't type anything either.

PatKam_AU: Yeah. I tried 2 different winxp cd's. Neither one would boot up.

babes_ganda0 : I tried the jumper settings already. I'm thinking I have a dead optical drive?

Would it work if I burned the entire XP Pro CD to my external hard drive and installed Windows from there?

It seems like that your Windows CD is the cause, is it scratched or have dirt on it? Only a blinking cusor means not even the first boot loader is read. Tried another CD?

You need to set the jumper setting from your Hard Drive as Master Drive and the CD/DVD player is Slave then go to Bios settings then set 1st boot CD/DVD to boot the windows installer..good luck and have a nice day..

I have a Compaq N1020v with a 14.1 display. The LCD was cracked and I plan to replace it. I would like to replace it with the 15 inch display for the Compaq N1020v. Will that work, or is the 15.0 to big?

It depends on how "adaptable" the mounts on the "surround" of the LCD screen, i.e., whether the one "surround" was used by COMPAQ for both 14" and 15" LCD screens, or whether the part-numbers were different.

My screen will not turn on Compaq Evo N1020v

Take a flash light (seriously) when its on point it at the screen do you see something? I betcha you got a bad back light or a inverter issue.

also you can try to hook up a external monitor maybe? if that comes on then you know you got a display fault.

when in doubt please contact manufacture support or bring it into a local repair shop for a estimate.

Be considerate your solution was free, please leave a rating and feedback for your free solution, thanks

Compaq Evo N1020v operating system not found. I dont have recovery disk and also it dosnt seem to pick up xp when I insert into CD Drive. What could be the exact settings to boot from CD Drive?

Hi,

Make sure that your CD is Bootable. Now you will need to do settings in BIOS to boot from CD..

1. Power ON the computer and Press "Delete Key" or F1 or F2 or F10 Key to enter in BIOS.
2. Goto Boot Menu Options
3. Select First Boot Device to CD / DVD
4. Second Second Boot Device to HDD
Now Save Settings and exit . it will reboot computer . If your CD is bootable then it will ask to boot from cd message.

Option 2 :
You can try by pressing F12 or F11 key simultaneouslty after power ON computer. It will display Boot Menu so from there you can select "CD/ DVD Drive " and press enter then it will boot from computer.

It will glad to help you further if your problem doesnot get resolved.

Compaq evo n1020v not able to boot, no displal.

You have a sick laptop, could be simply a faulty power adapter to a faulty motherboard. The Evo is old and probably not worth fixing, better to put your money towards a new laptop.
There is a way to retrieve data from your hard drive provided it is not faulty.
Remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Insert the adapter into a working computer's USB port and the computer will see this as an external hard drive. You can then open the folders and view your files. Copy the various folders and files you require to a USB memory stick and/or burn these to a CD etc.
It pays to backup your data regurarly because if the hard disk fails and this can happen unexpectedly, you will lose your data.
If the hard drive is faulty, there are companies that can retrieve data from faulty hard drivers, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

I have a Compaq Evo N1020v and I tried to reinstall the operating system and now I am getting "Error loading operating system". This is an older computer but it was working fine up to a few days ago....

"tried to" do you mean it finished installation and it was succesful? I doubt that

I think you realy have to do the installation again
the best way is to delete all partitions and format
after.

Computer wont boot

Try disambling the system. Clean it with a wind blower. Check BIOS battery capacity. Replace if possible. Power on the laptop. Do you hear humming sound from hard disk ? If you hear sssssssshhhhh sound from hard disk; it's OK. Replace RAM with new one. If problem still exists Than change main board. Hope that not happen. Keep informing.
