It could be a failing fan motor or magnetron.

While a microwave should never be left running unattended under any circumstances (as your owner's manual will tell you) it's even more important when one is exhibiting a failure or any odd behavior. So play it safe and stay with it while it's running!

And, as with anything that is not working right, it should be fixed as soon as possible or it can get worse.

If it's less than one year old, it would be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

It could just be the turntable which helps cook the food evenly. Remove the glass plate (turntable) and see if the ring with wheels on it is under the glass turntable. If it is put a coffee cup of water in run the unit on high for 30 seconds. Did it still make the noise? If no remove the water and put the ring with wheels on it in the center of the microwave. Place the glass turntable on top of the ring rotating it until it locks in place and will not turn easily. Try the water again on top of the glass turn table to see if the noise returns.

That is the sound of the magnetron failing. The large capacitor inside may also be drying up and causing the sound. When the capacitor dries up further it will start blowing fuses.

Microwave making noise and no heat.

Sounds like the magnetron tube went out. Not cost effective to repair unless under warranty.

Sparking ? Power Surge ?

I had the same problem. I replaced the wave guide/cover and everything was fine. It is a piece of cardboard inside the microwave that covers the magnetron. Mine was saturated with grease, and was damaged by the fire. If yours is still intact and not that greasy, You can carefully remove it. Clean both it and the area inside the cavity with an alcohol based cleaner. If there is so much as a pin hole in the cover it will need to be replaced. When grease somehow gets behind the cover an arc is formed which causes the problem.

Chances are it is a bad magnetron, but it may be a bad high voltage rectifier diode.

Some models have a 9-year warranty on the magnetron, so you may want to check with GE Customer Service at http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/contact/

The pop and wierd noise makes me suspect the diode has shorted.

If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

Plus there should be a very helpful "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel.

GE Microwave Model JES735

Yes, the fan blade is hitting something inside.Usually by opening the microwave, you can slide or reposition the plastic fan blade on the shaft.Probably this happened in shipping to the store where you bought it.CAUTON:make sure the unit is unplugged before you attempt this.Other option is return for replacement.
