Question about D-Link Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I recently installed a DIR-628 router. Internet connection is generally great. However, logging into my company's VPN via citrix constantly gives me (not responding) msg. I think it's Vista-related. Is there a vista setting that's blocking this? Other laptops on the network don't have this problem

No luck. Perhaps some more clues might help.
-all internet options settings are established exactly to my company's IT recommendations
-problem began immediately after installing the new router. Previous router was a linksys (which had other issues, but none of these i'm describing)
-a friend's new computer (with vista) works fine, Geek Squad turned off a setting and she's unsure of which setting it was
-i get a 'This program has known compatibility issues' error message when running Citrix through the VPN. Prior to installing the new router, i would just hit 'run anyway' and life was good.
-i do get into VPN, but it is very slow to connect and just about every mouse click returns with a 'not responding' message
-also, immediately after installing the router, my Microsoft Office applications (installed on my laptop hard drive, not VPN) became very slow to initiate, frequently also getting 'not responding' message
-if i disconnect from my network, the Microsoft Office applications open immediately

To me, this all smells like there's some setting that Vista has set to protect me from myself and the D-link network isn't compatible with this setting.

Hope this helps shed some light.
    Thanks

Sorry for the delayed response. I was a couple of updates behind on my Microsoft Updates, and i figured this was a good time to run those before running the tool.

The updates didn't fix my problem.

The connectivity tool passed every test.

The user control access thing didn't work.

I managed to shut off wireless connectivity altogether for the last hour. Finally figured out the problem and got it restored.

Haven't tried the DPNP thing. I don't think it's router issues, because other VIsta users don't have the same problem. I don't like messing with the router settings, seems like when i do, i screw up more than i do good. (see above comment).

I'm not sure what you'd call my setup:
    Cable plugs into modem.
    Modem connects to router.
    Router connects to desktop.

I sort of wonder if it has something to do with trying to hook up a printer through the wireless network that's hard wired to the desktop computer. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but i'm stumped.

I've had enough frustration for today. Probably calling geek squad tomorrow, but i'll try DPNP thing before hand. Time to drink some beer.

I sent myself (and you) down the wrong bunny-trail.

Apparently, it's the way I set up my network printer. I deleted two default Microsoft printers, my current printer and the previous name of my printer.

This was the other variable that i completely forgot about. When i purchased the new router, I succeeded (or so i thought) in connecting my laptop to the printer through the network. For whatever reason, opening these applications would make laptop think it had to find the printer and be ready to send a print job.

So, printers are deleted and my computer is happy again. Reconnecting to the 'real' printer introduced the problem all over again.

As far as I'm concerned, you've earned your pay. Don't cancel the charge.
    Thanks for your time.

Try running the program with admin rights - Right click on the file and select Run as Administrator. Also check for a updated version of the software.

You could check the windows firewall settings, but the software I have from citrix works perfectly.

what I meant to say is that the software I have from citrix didn't require me to edit the firewall settings at all.

I've never seen this problem. I don't know how it could be affecting office.
    Run this tool
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/using/t...

You need to use it with internet explorer, firefox and other browsers wont work. Let me know the results of the test(s).

  • Ekse Jun 27, 2009

    Try these things:

Disable vista User Account Control - Method 4 on this page
    http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_wi...
This requires a restart- after which, test your programs.

Can you open up the router setup pages? try turning UPNP Off from the router.

Try these thigns for now. Also are you behind NAT or is the connection bridged?
If you are on nat or behind a firewall, try the DMZ and set it to your computers ip.

  • Ekse Jun 27, 2009

Okay, I see. Forget about the UPNP - it can't be the problem.

I'm clueless really, I've never seen this kind of issue come up because of router change - and other machines work perfectly. and why is office affected?!

Please if you get the Geek Squad guys over, Get them to tell you exactly what the problem is and how they fixed it, I really want to know why a router change would do that.

You can email me directly at nikoht@gmail.com.

Now since this hasn't been very helpful and if you get the geek squad guys to come over and pay them, I assume you want your 10usd refunded from us?

Buy 2 DIR 130 VPN routers and connect the two office networks via LAN-LAN VPN tunnels.
If you have the time and skills you can build two IPCOP firewall routers and connect via VPN tunnels (http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/ipcop/wiki)

RE: My posted. Connecting DSL/Router to DIR-628 internet router

Installing a router to work as the second one on a home networkrequires special configuration. Do the following on the second routerto ensure it (and the devices attached) function properly:1. Connect as local device or bridge - If connecting the second router via Ethernet cable, plug it into one of the LAN ports on the first router. If connecting the second router wirelessly, ensure the second router is set for client mode.Note that some home wireless routers do not support client mode; thesemust be connected by cable. Check your router documentation for detailson its client mode configuration support.

2. Check / change IP address - Most home network routers use a default IP addresssetting. Often, these default IP addresses will not work in a tworouter environment. Check the second router's IP address value andreset it if necessary to work within the valid address range of thefirst router (and to not conflict with any other device on the network).

3. Disable DHCP- To avoid IP address conflicts between all of the devices on the homenetwork, only one of your two routers should assign addresses via DHCP. All mainstream routers provide an option to disable DHCP as part of the router's configuration screens.

(My netgear router supports client mode. The 2wire supports bridged and router mode. My 2wire is the main router. I set up my netgear using my laptop. Once you change the address on the router.. You will only be able to directly access through the main router to the 2701.)

Configure your 2701 IP address to a static address in the 192.168.2.1 range and diable DHCP. Only 1 router can run the DHCP service. To disable Dhcp on the 2701.... log on to 2701> click on home network>advanced settings>uncheck enable DHCP>Next section is Public routed subinterface...Check enable and Aout Firewall Open>Input your main router address and mask>save config..

This worked with the Netgear router.. May not with your router. Good Luck! Hope this helps!
