I had a similar problem, I could hear the valve clicking and spark working, but no flame. I checked for voltage as per the previous post, and checked continuity of both coils. Both showed voltage and continuity, but the ohm reading on one coil was less than the other.

I called a rv repair shop looking to buy a new valve ($120 - ouch). He didn't have one and when I explained what I had checked, he said could be that only one valve is opening. He suggested I remove one wire from each coil, turn the heater switch on and when I hear the spark igniter, touch a wire to one of the coils at a time. If it clicks, then it's fine, if it doesn't, then it could be the coil that needs replacing or the valve is stuck. If you see a spark as you touch the wire but no clicking, then it's a stuck valve. If there's no spark, then it's most likely a defective coil. A stuck valve can sometimes be freed by tapping with a screw driver.

In my case, one valve clicked, the other didn't and no spark was seen so I had a defective coil.

The previous poster is right, replacement coils are not offered as a replacement part - but - the repair shop I talked to saves all the coils out of old heaters and I was able to buy one from him for $10.

Problem solved, heater now works!!

Check your valve wire connections with a test lamp or volt meter to see if you have 12 VDC going to each solenoid when the unit is trying to light. Then check your valve coils for continuity.

Assuming the electrode is sparking, you are getting voltage to both solenoids, and you cannot smell LP gas when it is trying to light, you may have a bad coil on your gas valve.

You will have to buy a new gas valve as Sububran does not sell solenoids by themselves.

New valve available on Ebay for about $75, but I am going to first check the small curly gas line below the valve to the burner, as one rv owner found that pipe clogged and after rinsing it out, resumed proper gas flow. [Besides worries about liability, the entire repair industry would rather take your money than offer any of the good advice available in places such as this website!!!] God Bless You All who share this info!

Hear no clicking when I turn on switch inside my unit, suburban water heater model sw12de. Could igniter be out?

Could be your igniter or possibly your control board. The red light not being on indicates you most likely have an electrical issue. Check your breaker as well. If you nee any parts this site will have them all

How do I check my hot water heater

Do you have a meter? You can use it to see if you have power and if there is a problem with the thermostat. If not then it would be best to have it looked at by someone at an RV center.

We have changed the element and is still not working.

What water heater do you have? Question posted under BW 120V 6 gallon electric.
Element is found on electric water heater.
Igniter is found on gas water heater.
So now it get's confusing what water heater you have.... for example some 6 gallon RV water heaters have both electric and gas. And troubleshoot for that is different than electric water heater.
Copy following link for electric water heater troubleshoot resources:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html
Does tank have 2 elements or 1? Which element did you change... why did you change element before replacing thermostat? What symptoms were you experiencing before changing element?
Is this a new heater? Was tank full of water before power turned ON?
Add a comment and describe problem in detail.

Need to replace G6A-6E Atwood waterheater, what replacement model can I use?

Why not the same model/size? Atwood 6 gal, works on propane with electronic ignition. Or, you can get the 6 gallon with electronic ignition, and electric element as well provided you are willing to run hydro to water heater as well, if not already there. Check any RV parts site for prices and availability. Some places are out of stock currently. I assume your current tank is leaking?

Have an Atwood 10 gallon gas/electric water heater. When on electric, water gets only luke warm. Would like to check element, but can't find it. Do I have to remove the water heater from the RV to...

If it is electric, It has an element. I would suggest that before reinstalling the unit, you make accommodations to make the next experience a little easier. Add an access door to the rear of the unit

The electronic ignition on a gas water heater will not heat up and glow red to ignite the gas to heat the water atwood r/v water heater

You won't see any red glow until the burner ignites and burns for a while. Its only an ignitor and flame sensor, not a glow plug style. The ignitor has to provide spark for gas to ignite, then it also senses the flame and keeps gas flow coming. What exactly is happening when you turn it to on?

Have no hot water flowing at all from my Atwood hot water heater. cold ok tank full?

Hi and welcome to Fixya.

Here are 2 manuals that should help you in troubleshooting your RV hot water problem.

Multiple times there is a ref. to resetting the reset switch for 30 seconds on the unit (cover removal required)

For the ignition:

http://www.atwoodmobile.com/manuals/waterheaters/MPD%2093757%20PS%2011.19.07.pdf

For the water heater:

http://www.atwoodmobile.com/manuals/waterheaters/MPD%2093050%20PS%204.9.09.pdf

The manuals as written are full of warnings mixed in with meaningful text. (Not user friendly)
