Question about Boating

I am looking to find a cheap second hand canoe for me, my husband and 10 and 7 year old to use on the lakes of MN. I have been offered an aluminum Grumman for 400, and I do not know if it comes with anything else. I have also been offered a fiber-glass canoe in good shape for 375, the only title on the boat is "national fiberglass industries, it has a 900 lb capacity, has a keel. It comes with 5 lifejackets, 2 paddles, pads and straps for putting it on top of the cat and is registered through 2011. Which direction should I go in? Thanks, Jane

I would definitely go for the fiberglass canoe. That sounds like a great deal especially since you get all those accessories . Aluminum canoes can be very heavy.

The fiberglass will be fine for lakes,if you use it in rivers with rocks and ledges the Grumman will take more of a beating.I had a 15' Grumman for 30 yrs The fiberglass will also be alot heavier for car topping etc. a weld shop can fix any crack you may put into the aluminium canoe

Hi. You will enjoy the 375 dollar fiberglass canoe, especially with all the accessaries! I don't think you could find a better price that would fulfill all your requirements. Fiberglass is easy to repair if damaged. All other surfaces are not and can become unrepairable! Fiberglass is also low maintainance but I would recommend storing it out of the sunlight. When you go for the purchase ask the previous owner if he would mind if you fill it up with water? This is one way of checking the integrity of the hull. My canoe has three seats. If you canoe has no seats sit on your lifejackets and it helps keep any supplies or you bum drier. Have fun! I'm getting ready to write some stories about my latest canoe trip. I have a coleman canoe about 1978ish model 5907-719 17 ft. I can't find a replacement center thwart. Any ideas?

Post a picture of what it looks like, if you can.

If it was wood, then just make one. Else make a wooden one to fit where the Aluminum would have been. That is the usual thing to do with older boats, and cost-effective.

If you really care about the canoe, seek out an old one for sale "well used" and buy it as a replacement or for parts. An elderly Colman is not worth a lot, so don;t spend a ton on fixing the first one.

My husband would like to start canoeing with our 10 and 8year old kids. He is a beginner and would like to take them fishing and just relaxing trips. Do you recommend a canoe?

Canoes are great for family outings in water and they are relatively easy to use even for children as young as 6yrs, (if accompanied by an adult). Paddling is quite simple and although it may feel tippy, canoes are really quite stable in the water. Make sure the adult is in the stern of the boat so he can steer and see what the other passengers are doing.

How do I fix my badly faded canoe, colour is red and only faded down one side?

I would recommend painting it with a type of paint that would adhere to the material the canoe is made of whether that is aluminum, fiberglass, etc. My guess is that you have been leaving only half of the canoe in the sun, so when you store the canoe, either keep it in a shaded area or cover it with a tarp to keep the sun off.

How do iI chose a fishing boat?

There are three styles of regular fishing boats; deep v, regular v or modified v. The v determines how well the boat cuts through the depth of the water. The deep v is better suited for large lakes because they can handle heavy waves better. Regular "v" is more appropriate for smaller lakes and a man made body of water. As the water is not as deep and the waves are not as heavy, this type of boat is able to handle the situation. The modified v is the most popular version. It is capable of handling speed best. Most fishing boats on the market today are made of fiberglass or aluminum. What is best for your fishing situation? Do you want to fish in large lakes or small lakes? The options are endless. There are several classes of fishing boats for different situations. All purpose fishing boats are great for your basic fishing needs. This type of boat has space for some bench seats, fishing gear and a simple steering station. They are made of either fiberglass or aluminum and are between 15 and 20 feet long. Another type of fishing boat is a bass boat, which comes fully equipped with space for rods and fishing gear. The boat is fully built with electronics and livewells. This boat also is made out of fiberglass and aluminum. The advantage to this type of boat is it is made especially to catch bass, fast. The third type of fishing boat is the center-console. It allows a fisherman to angle from any place on the deck. The control center is located in the center. Depending on the size of the boat they can be used offshore as well as near. Flats boats are mostly made up of fiberglass. The advantage of these boats is they allow easier angling access to saltwater flat fish. Another advantage it has is a poling platform that allows for fish spotting. Finally, a casting deck allows the angler to keep control. This makes this ype of boat convenient for fishing. The final category of fishing boats is the fun boat because it combines the motor of a yacht and the functionality of large a cockpit to work trophy fish and bring them on board. If ou are a fishing fanatic then it is important to have all the things that you need to make your fishing trip a success. Fishing boats are definitely the finishing touch to a nice fishing trip.

Aluminum canoes

Well-made aluminum canoes are rugged and most dents can be punched out. They are the ultimate no-maintenance canoe. Even when left outdoors all year, neither rain nor snow affects them and they will not take on weight with age. They are rigged with flotation air tanks or foam compartments to render them unsinkable. On the downside, aluminum canoes are noisy, tend to cling to (rather than glide over) rocks, and conduct heat and cold. Most aluminum canoes carry their beam well forward and aft so that they push rather than cut through the water. This hull design, however, makes them initially more stable and increases their carrying capacity.

Topo maps a mess of meaningless lines

Sorry for late reply. You need to select an area on your topo map prior to downloading it. For example, if you plan to go to Algonquin Bice Lake (access point 4), then you need to select the map around the area (starting from) Kearney upto the Magnetawan Lake and beyond. Mark waypoints from the put-in to the campsite on Bice Lake (best to compare of the topo and Algonquin canoeing map). Then you can click Transfer, click Send to Device (GPS 76cs should appear) to download it. On the GPS, enter the Find Waypoint button and you should be able to see those waypoints. Good luck for your next trip.
