If you look inside the cannister and see hair "twining" up into the holes which you can't reach and the filter keeps getting full of hair and stuff this is definitely the problem (faulty seal on the rubber gasket).
It's not really that they "improved" it, but rather it seems like perhaps some new trainee at the factory had a bad day, or week, or month and didn't pull the gasket down enough so it overhangs the end (when you change this to the correct position it just snaps right into place and you will immediately go "Ah hah! even though you can totally see how someone might think the flush with end position was supposed to be correct).

Problem is that once the hair is already twisted up in there it's near impossible to get out, so even though you can fix the future problem, it's already too late.

They were really nice at Dyson and seemed to know immediately this was the problem (it's definitely a known issue) and sent us out a new cannister top (the colored part). NOW I see what they mean by Dyson Animal's are awesome. I mean it worked before, but was never really outstanding.

So, for the search terms----dirty filter and hair up inside the holes in a Dynson 17---then this could be your problem. We bought out Dyson in the summer of 2007 so that may help you identify this situation. It didn't really clog up bad until early this summer so it appears that the eventually inside clog develops slowly and it's not until it affects the filter that you can really "see" a problem.

Mine was doing the same thing. Dyson sent me a whole new "guts" part for the inside of the clear canister (the cyclone, and the rubber ring on the bottom) The rubber ring was not sealing correctly and it has apparently been a problem, so they now have a redesigned one they will send you for free.

I need to know if the filter in my vacuum cleaner is washable?

What I have found over time is that even if a filter is marketed as being washable it really means that the material will not be damaged by water. The key difference here is that it won't necessarily be cleaned better by washing. Electrolux sell a lot of washable filter for example but what i find is that washing only sets the dirt as mud. The problem is that the pores of a filter are incredibly small and water does not dislogde the particles. Remember that in the normal run of things the suction power of the vacuum is actually wedging dirt into the pores.
The best way to clean a filter like that is with an air compressor but it is very messy. Generally speaking a filter will be past it's best after a year or so of usage. My advice is air compress or replace but don't wash.

My DC08 dyson doesn't seem to have the suction it used to have, is there anything I can do to get it back

Poor suction is almost always caused by a blockage of some kind. You need to check all the pipes and hose, and remove any obstruction. You also need to check the filters - particularly the washable filter - and make sure they're clean. If you wash the washable filter, it's vital that you follow the instructions about drying it - if you use it when it's even slightly damp it can clog badly. If in doubt, get a new filter.

Suction problem? The carpet fiber and pet hair

You've probably got a lesser blockage further down the pipework, which is reducing the airflow. Check everywhere possible for blockages, and also make sure the washable filter is clean and dry.

My Dyson vacum's suction power apperas weaker the usual.

You might want to check three things. First, is the washable filter under the dust bin clean. Take off the dust bin, open the filter cover and check the washable filter. Wash it while you are at it, let it dry 12 hours. Next, make sure the gasket that seals the flip open door to the center of the dust bin is on correctly. Owner's manual shows the correct way and you want to be sure the ribs on the gasket are seated in the grooves on the center tube in the dust bin (this will also cause your washable filter to clog really badly if not on correctly. Third, your cyclone could be plugged with hair or something. This will happen if you pick up something wet, or damp or clean up lots of pet hair. Here's a good site on how to take your cyclone apart and clean it. http://www.exonotes.com/content/node/4

Hair on top of washable filter on d14 animal

One way or another, dirty air is by-passing the cyclone. Check that all the seals are undamaged and in place, especially the big black ring at the bottom of the yellow bit inside the clear bin.  Also check that the bin base closes tight after you've emptied it.
If this doesn't help, please post a response and I'll try again.  If it does help, please remember to rate me!

Dyson collecting debris/hair, ect on top of hepa filter?

Called Dyson today about the cyclone canister clogging in my DC17 Animal. Turns out it's a problem with the black rubber gasket in the bottom of the canister. This also causes the HEPA filter to get lots of dirt and debris on top of it. They are sending me a new Cyclone canister with the corrected gasket. This will prevent anything but small particles of dust from entering the top of the cyclone and the HEPA filter should no longer collect all that stuff. Hope so!

Washable filter is getting clogged with dog hair

I have a Dyson Animal Absolute and a rescue white american eskimo dog and two tabby cats.

We found white hair on top of the washable filter and called Dyson to fix it. There shouldn't be anything on that filter.

The Dyson rep said:

Check the black rubber seal that surrounds the "cyclone" holes as it may need to be pushed down because it isn't sealing properly.

To do this remove the cannister and dump out the stuff in there. Do it outside so the fluff doesn't circulate in the house.

Turn the entire filter part upside down so you can see inside.

Check the seal that is at the bottom of the entire filter part and look at the two half moon "nozzles" that **** up the dirt.. now make sure the black rubber band that surrounds those two nozzles is either up or down... do this then vacuum a bit.. check the washable filter to see if it is clean...make sure the rubber seal actually is sealing.. it should just set into place once you have it done properly.

Now if this doesn't fix it, call Dyson, the number is printed on the front of the machine.. and give them your serial number which is located behind the removable cannister. The machine has a 5 year warranty.
