I had same problem with Vista Home Basic and Lexmark x4270 printer. Fussed with it for 2 days with no success. Called their Customer Service at 1-800-539-6275, asked for Assist, they logged on to my PC, stayed on the line with me, ran some "clean-up" programs and in about an hour I was printing again. Very painless, just takes patience.....JPB

I'm not at all surprised that you are having problems. Try using the Vista printer driver (assuming one is listed in Vista). To do this go to 'Printers', and hit 'New', and follow the prompts to get to your machine. If that fails you need to buy another printer.
