The car was fine when I started it and halfway to our destination, it began to make a strange whirring sound and the battery light came on. It starts without a problem so it has to be something else
It sounds like the bearings in your alternator are going so it's charging your battery but no a 100%.

It sounds like your starter needs cleaned or replaced. The poping noise could be the actuator not engaging right. As for the engine light, it could be just a coincidence.
