No the TV has not been violently moved recently. I was fine one minute then not. I had been acting weird, my kids would jump on the floor and it would go normal again. It hadn't done that in a month or so. What size is the magnet? I did not know rear projection TVs had magnets. The remote has no affect and neither does change the input method.

  • kcchiefs384 Jun 29, 2009

Thanks for the idea, unfortunately it didn't seem to change anything. I had left it unplugged since Sunday morning, I just checked all the connections, none felt loose and then powered it up, still looks very 3D. When I run the perfect focus function it doesn't get past the red test. I attached a pic of the screen, not sure if it will help. Could the convergence board be bad?
sure if that means the red is the issue or not.

It sounds like you have lost a magnet of one of the CRT's. Has the TV been moved violently? Does the remote have any effect?

True convergence problem. The crt's use electromagnets and magnets for alignent of the electon beam. Magnets are physical alignment and the electro magnets are vis remote. The kids juming is a key element. I would suggest unplugging the tv and let it set 24hrs to discharge. Discharging the tv is critical. The picture tubes hold a significant charge and should be respected!!

What you are describing is a loose or marginal connection. Kids jumping is like slapping the side shocking the loose connection. I would pull the back cover, and OBSERVE the electronic connections around the yoke of the three CRT's. Keep hands away from larg diameter cable near the projection side of the tube. (large end) If you know what color is drooping, close inspection of that tube connections compared to the others would be a place to start. While the back cover is off consider blowing the dust out eliminating heat build up, and wiping the optics before reinstalling the cover. Let me know

Picture looks like 3d i have ajusted screen but keeps going back to 3d and picture is bowed

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.
This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
•Screen looks 3D
•Colors don't line up
•One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
•Screen is bowed or warped.
•TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

  • Screen looks 3D

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Your convergence ICs are defective and quite possibly the burning smell was likely some of the convergence Resistors burning. Its actually not that exspensive of a repair. you can get a brand new Sub deflection board for your set for 232.00 at the following link and that will fix your set and you just put the new board in. The site will also provide you with free on line tech support to assist you with installing the new board. you need the P54 Sub deflection board. Its available at the following link.
