Question about LaCie 301103U 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I can't believe how slowly my backup is running

I can beleive how slowly my backup is running.

I have a brand new 500 Gb LaCie drive. For my first backup, I just clicked on backup my entire C: drive, which contains about 30Gb. After 2.5 hours, the backup software indicates that it is about 14% complete. This would mean an estimate of 17 - 18 hours to backup.

Is this normal? Have I missed something?

There is nothing else running on my computer. The LaCie is connected through a high speed USB hub.

I stopped using Backup software. I now just drag-and-drop the folders I want to back up. It works much faster.

Try different backup software. I had a problem with Acronis, which worked fine on one computer, but not on another. On the other, Symantic Ghost completed a backup in about 2 hrs. for a 6GB system drive

Hard drive is no good. If new replace under warranty. Given the bad luck you have had with this brand, you might consider replacing it with a different unit.

How can I format an external lacie drive to mount on both a PC and a MAC without partitioning

You can not use the drive on both systems. It has to be formatted for one or the other. To transfer your files, I would either backup your files to CD's/DVD's or try to network your Mac and PC, then just dump your files to a share folder of some sort.

External hard drive

500Gb Lacie D2 Quadra with the same problem of flashing led and not mounting on the desktop (Mac G4 Mirror), traced to the power supply (57w) going down on power, both 12v and 5v supplies are available but the main power to run the drive drops to below an adequate output, hence the clicking and whirring evident from the drive with simultaneous flashing led.

Testing with another Lacie power supply (250Gb D2) this time a 34w unit got the drive up and running, however, and this is the reason for this post, this lower power PSU failed a week later whilst waiting for a warranty replacement from Lacie (5 weeks and still waiting for the new PSU from them. they have no stock)

Message for all Lacie D2 users, check the power supplies first, test with another Lacie PSU, do not run the drive on a lower rating (34w) PSU it will fry it and leave you with another failed power supply.

If you are in a tight spot use the temporary power supply to move your data to another drive and get the correct 57w power supply before running the drive again.

Don't do as I did assume any Lacie power supply will run any Lacie hard drive, they won't, fortunately I had a second back up, but am 2 drives down and no new PSU's available to buy anywhere.

Try and purchase another spare 57w power supply, something all D2 users should do for long term security, as these do not seem to be very reliable and getting warranty support from Lacie on these is currently impossible.

The lack of 57w power supplies from Lacie and its distributors across the world is surely a warning to be noted!!!!!!

Buyers beware!

Sync software/empty folder/ slow backup/

hello frustrated one,

the back up feature is application dependent, not hardware dependent, misfortunately. Gotta love sales guys.

my understanding is that these will back up data files, not application files.

backup speed is dependent on how it's connected. in ascending order.

USB 2.0

simple situation..just need to know what your connecting with.

Also, you may want to consider an online backup utility, as well. I use one from here

Hard drive making strange alarm/chiming noise and won't load onto desktop

Listen to your power supply and see if it is making a faint buzzing noise. Try your device with a new power supply. With a new power supply my drive now runs fine, and was not corrupted.
