To setup an email account on the iPad and iPhone, when setting up the account you have to fill in the correct account name (Complete) and the correct password. During setup, the iPxxx checks the name and password. If it tics all lines green, the account is accepted. If not, look where it went wrong.
Could be you tried to set up a POP account as a IMAP or viva versa. Or you did not enter the complete address or a wrong password.
If you already did setup the address(es) and you could receive mail before, check if your wifi router is still working, or look on the iPxxxx if WiFi is switched on.
Sometimes you have to reset he WiFi router, by disconnecting it from the power for a minute or so. Then it not only resets, but also clears all its buffers, making its memory free.
