Question about Computers & Internet

I have just built a new custom PC and my new XFX GTS 250 will not work with my Vista Ultimate 64 bit OS but it will work on my Dad's Dell XPS with Vista Ultimate 32 bit! Also his Nvidia 8800 GTX will work on my 64 bit PC! Any idea why or what I can do?

    Thanks Compus,

I have already done this a number of times including uninstalling and using DriverSweeper before downloading and installing the latest driver form XFX and directly from Nvidia. I can't use the driver on the CD which came with with the GPU as it is only for 32 bit OS and it refers you back to the XFX download site! The really puzzeling bit for me is that my Dad's Nvidia 8800 GTX slotted in and worked straight away with the same driver! Although he has the same updated driver on his machine albeit a 32 bit version?

Your device driver have been tampered with. Check the internet for the driver of your device, download it and install it on your system. You can also use the CD that came with it if any.

Cheers

XPS-410 needs to have MCE 2005 Rollup two SP3 replaced by Windows 7 64 bit. Too many problems to list currently but will work limited programs

Not sure what you are trying to do. If you are trying to convert 32 bit to 64 bit Apps, try going to manufacturers website to look for drivers.
Win 7 will actually find the best drivers for your devices.

Have a Dell XPS 410 with 32 OS. Want to upgrade to a 64 OS. Need info

With the 410, you will need much more RAM before having a 64 bit OS becomes useful. I assume that you have the default 2GB. In any case, all you need is to buy a x64 OS and install it.

I just built a computer with 16Gb of DDR2 RAM. What OS should I put on this baby so that I can actually USE all 16GB of RAM? I was going to go with 2008 Server but someone told me Windows 7 would support...

Hi,

Thanks for using Fixya.

Wow, 16gigs of RAM... thats alot!
Well, for you to be able to get full use of your 16gigs ram. You need to be using a 64BIT OS. Windows Vista and Windows 7 has 64bit versions. The main problem that you will encounter with using 64bit OS is driver compatibility with your devices. Hopefully all your components have 64bit drivers. I hope this helps.

Thanks and have a nice day.

Dell Dimension XPS PC Desktop won't boot

Hi,

Vista is available in 32 and 64 bit os.
if your system ran xp which was most likely 32 bit. And you have installed a 64 bit version os.
this will be your problem, also Vista requires more system RAM/Memory to run it.
If you get 1 beep at startup, it states the system is ok.
Alternatives are device drivers incompatability.
Check M$ website, regarding vistas minimum system requirements.

Dell Inspirion 1521 Laptop Microphone Wont Work

checklist:
1. sound driver 2. microphone settings in volume control applet 3. tap test (tap the area around the microphone and see if eg Sound Recorder picks it up) 4. external microphone
If you get to step 4 before you get anything then your problem is one of missing or damaged microphone.

64 bit?

I run Vista 64 bit with no issues at all. 64 bit is the future of the computer world. If software is made to utilize 64 bit operating systems the speed is quite remarkable. 64 bit Vista is still backward compatible with 32 bit so virtually all programs except for the oldest legacy stuff. Also 64 bit allows you to surpass 32 bit's 3 gigabyte memory barrier. Vista 64 can use up to 128 gigabytes. It may not seem important now ,but at the rate computers evolve it will.

Best operating system for new build?

Either Windows XP or Vista 64 bit edition, depending on what you like...I won't get into the xp vs. vista battle here lol. The 64 bit operating systems can see all of your memory, with the 32 bit OS's, you're limited to around 3 or so gigs. Do note, that there may be some incompatibilities with a 64 bit operating system, though most programs should run fine.
