Question about Sony Handycam DCR-HC42 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Gray horizontal lines in video playback

Like the previous poster, for a while in playback I could hear the camera running but the screen remained blue. I waited a while and tried again and it did play back the video, but with thick gray horizontal lines across the screen. The camera is brand new. Used once a couple weeks ago with no playback problems and once yesterday. Problems began today. I'm seeing similar posts around the internet, but no solutions...anyone?

Gray bars on screen during video playback

My advice is that you should by a cleaning cassette. Put this in the camera and run it for 10 to 20 seconds only. running the cleaning cassette for a long time may damage the head.
good luck!

Horizontal lines on playback screen

Someone here recommended on another post to put the lense cap on & videotape the blackness in a quiet room for 5-10 mins. I tried this as a last resort & it worked. When I played back the tape, no more skipping or gray lines. I had 4-5 SOLID gray lines with skipping video & audio in between on every tape I put in. I think the person who helped me solve this said that it was a result of the tape alignment going off. My camera is a Canon zr80 digital camcorder. (Called Canon, they had me reset it & then recommended sending it in).

Wide Horizontal lines on playback

Wide bands in the playback video indicate a clogged or defective video head assembly. If your cleaning tape appears to resolve the problem, the heads are getting contaminated. I would not use the same tape in this unit. Try cleaning the heads and then use a brand new tape to avoid clogging the drum assy again. If this does not resolve the problem, the drum assembly will have to be replaced. Hope this helps. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org
