I am trying to re install windows xp on an old PC so i can securely wipe it clean and give it to the local junior school, unfortunately i have got to the screen requiring the product key number and I cant...

If the computer originally came with Windows XP pre-installed, there should be a decal on the side-panel of the tower, or maybe the back-panel, stating the 25-character product-key. Is there?

Sometimes, the manufacturer customized the Windows XP product, so that their version could be installed _without_ asking for a product-key -- the modified software will _only_ install on hardware made by the manufacturer. Contact the manufacturer, and order a set of "System Restore" CDs; probably about $20, plus $20 for overnight-courier.

Before (unfortunately!) you started the re-install process, you could have extracted the product-key from the installed copy of Windows, using the free 'PRODUKEY' software.

Microsoft has a program whereby they will give a license to install Windows to any computer donated to a school. Contact Microsoft, or search their web-site for details.

I downloaded a software package to my windows XP desktop but, when I try to install I get a pop up stating location Doc. and settings not valid in win32 application. Please advise.

Sounds like the download got corrupted. Try Deleting the current copy and re-downloading. If it still does not work, verify that you have downloaded the 32 bit version of the software if there is a 32 and 64 bit versions available.

E drive not accessible

This could be a driver issues or is it software .

(Assuming you have XP installed.)
Remove device and software first reboot then reinstall
if you have the disk then reinstall should be straight forward.

Try plugging in the device ,
and use the device manager for the drivers update install.
(while in device manager-select device rightclick and update)

This should fix your issue,
If problem persists,
refer the problem to the retailer you purchased from,
is it still under wanrantee ?,
the supplier should honor the warantee no problems....

You may need to provide proof of purchase for warantee

Let us know the results thanks

Vista os loads software but wont reconize camera

There might be compatibility issue. Try running the compatibility wizard in vista. You can start the wizard by typing compatibility wizard in windows Help and Support; it will display a link. Select your powershot software in the list of programs and choose XP in the compatibility mode.
