Generally that's the limit. But to feed a piece that thick, you'd have to have a sharp blade, well adjusted guides and a pretty slow feed rate, depending on the species of wood. I'm guessing the saw will bog down and refuse to cut long before you reach that thickness, unless you have the patience of a saint and don't mind standing there feeding the board through a cm at a time.
Well- tuned it will definitely cut better, but these little portable saws are generally underpowered in my experience..and work best for 3/4" or less thick boards.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

Can I use my metal chop saw to cut wood if I replace the blade with a wood saw blade?

Its conversely sometimes possible if you was asking about a wood saw with a steel saw blade but i cannot advice that in both application its not safe because not only of the difference of power but most it is the much higher RPM by diameter, just beware always on the max rpm you can read on your saw blades!!, it can give strange accidents with objects it can grab and swinging outbroken parts away.

How can I cut wood 3.5 inches thick with Dewalt Scroll saw?

nope... throat on scroll saw is of fixed height... beside, all scrollsaw blades are of fixed length, i would suggest use of bandsaw with very narrow blade with minimal kerf. do not use pressure on the blade! you will then have same cut through the thickness of the wood! setup bandsaw correctly, do not overtension it - see my other instructables pertaining to the bandsaw and regulation/setup of it

if you find my solution helpful - do not me shy... give some points... :-)

Can anyone help please ive just got hold of a black and decker DN339 band saw and want to cut max 50mm soft wood with the grain using the fence to slide against, only the blade is tilting towards the fence...

That is usually an indication that the blade is blunt and one side has lost its edge more than the other. The blade will wander towards the sharper side. You will have to replace the blade. For soft wood you need about 4-6 tpi. and a cutting speed of about 1000 - 1500 ft/min.

My bandsaw don't work right, I go to cut wood ,the blade turn all difference way, I where out the block on the guide , It just don't work right

A couple options. 1. New blade. A dull blade will swivel around like that. Especially with a tight grained wood. 2. All the guides need to be properly adjusted including the height, both lateral guides, and the back guide.

I have a ryobi bs901 band saw... the cheap latex(?) rubber tires disintegrate in a single summer season due to the heat in my Georgia shop. I need real rubber tires built to last a while. Any suggestions?...

I had to take mine back. Some of these saws come with a small gap in the rubber wheel. This causes the rubber to deteriorate over time, kind of like a pot hole. I've had the replacement band saw for 5 years and it still works perfectly.

In the Market for a better Band Saw

Everybody wants to resaw, but the only saw I've seen that will do it is a resaw, they are big, powerful machines. I have an old delta 14, with an aftermarket 1 hp motor, trying to resaw is a nightmare. I don't try anymore. Jet makes a big resaw, so does grizzly, both Taiwan machines, what isn't>? But they work. If you are lucky enough to find an old bandsaw with 36 inch wheels and a ten HP motor, that would be nice, you could resaw whole cars in that thing.!I The $300 special might be worth getting and customizing to work, You would need a big blade, about 1 inch min, and a bigger motor, say 2HP min, Then hope that the tracking system will take the heavy cuts. When I have to slice something , I do it first on the table saw, cut both sides, then run it through the band saw at its max cut, 6 1/2 inches, then plow it through the planer. Always a way around this stuff. Hope this helps.

When cutting wood with band saw saw will cease up

This could have many causes...depending on the model of saw, the wood being cut, the blade you're using, etc. etc.
Check that the blade is correctly installed, up to tension, and sharp. Make sure the wheels run smoothly on their on, and under power. Check the horsepower of the motor, and make sure to keep the feed rate down within the motor's capacity. Finally, don't twist the work being cut to a smaller radius than the size blade will handle, or you will bind the blade in the cut.
If you are cutting wood with pitch or grain that is likely to be under tension, perhaps you need to insert a wedge into the cut to prevent the work from pinching the blade as it continues the cut.
I hope that leads to a solution. Sometimes all you can do is feed slowly and be patient...

Motor power question

Horsepower is the maximum power produced by the motor. Saws with high horsepower ratings are good for pattern cutting and cutting down thick stock. Higher horsepower also allows the saw to cut through thick stock without bogging down or burning the wood.
