Do you mean it's taking black pictures? If so this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Through a combination of the shutter speed and the lens aperture, the light reflected from the subject is transmitted to the memory card or film, depending on what your model actually uses.

Regardless of setting, picture is extremly over-exposed

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Although it's not showing on the LCD, recommend contacting Canon anyways (it can't hurt). Please check the following two links for more info:

No pictures recorded/black screen

it seems that shutter blades are stucked and are not working. when you say shutter is fully open i think you are talking about the lense cover, not the internal shutter assembly. the red light is the indication of OUT OF FOCUS SUBJECT OR FLASH NOT READY. if the shutter blades aare not open the camera would not be able to do the focusing and will flash the red light thus you would not get any image. contact the repairer.
