Question about Dell Latitude CPI-D Notebook

1 Answer

Just tried to install xubuntu using cdrom to dell cpid266xt. Installation was going fine (55% copying files) so i left it for about 10 mins. Came back - dell switched off (assumed battery flat). Put power back, tried to reinstall - no luck - when hdd accessed dell powers of straight away ! Tried disk check - same thing. Memory test worked ok tho - no disk access to check memory. Is there a secret partition on the disk that the xubuntu install overwrote - so now laptop cannot see partition and powers off. Any method i could use to recreate secret partition ?

Yes - I think you're correct. I put the power back on (battery at 6%) and it still wouldn't work (disc access failed). But i left it on charge and tried another distro when the batt was at about 60% & hey presto it's now installing... !
I suppose the hdd won't work if the batt is low even when on mains power - phew - thought i'd bricked the system for a while ... thx

I have a dell 1501 laptop i was experimenting with putting xubuntu on it and I only had the ac adapter on it. I was worried that If i only had battery power on it that it would turn off on me. Try it with only the ac adapter on it and that should allow it to got thru. It did on mine, only thing at that point is that you will need to configure the system and to hopefully get the right drivers.

Glad the ac adapter only being hooked up worked. Keep in mind that when batteries get to low that they can actually short out a laptop. Just some good info to know for the future. Hey if you can rate me on my solution to you I would be much obliged and I hope you get ubuntu working properly. I still want to get it to work on my other laptop, seems like a cool operating system.

HOW TO REINSTALL WINDOWS XP OR INSTALLING CLEAN COPY

How to reinstall Windows XP operating system or installing fresh copy of Windows XP on your computer.

If your Windows XP operating system had problem due to corrupted files, viruses problem or you want to upgrade your system. This procedure will guide you in reinstalling your current Windows XP or installing fresh copy.

After this installing process, you need all your hardware drivers like Chipset Intel driver, LAN driver, Sound driver, WAN driver, Webcam driver and others for the computer to be fully operational. Otherwise, do not proceed on reinstalling you operating system if your do not have those hardware drivers.

CDROM drive is required for installing Windows XP. If you don't have in your notebook computer, use external CDROM drive to connect in your computer using a USB cable.

1. To start with, you need to back up your in blank CD all your important files before you begin installation produre because all the data will be wipe out.

2. When ready, start your computer and when booting press F2 to
BIOS setting.

3. On BIOS menu, choose the BOOT setting and change the priority boot to CDROM, exit and save.

In some laptops, you can skip this BIOS setting process by repeatedly pressing F9 key or F10key when booting your computer and it will run boot priority on CD.

4. Once you exit from BIOS, you computer will reboot and a message will appear " Press any key to boot from CD", press any key to enter into WINDOWS XP SET UP.

5. Belows instruction messages will appear:

* To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER
* To repair Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R
* To quit set up without installing Windows XP, press F3

Press ENTER to initiate the installation.

6. You will go to Windows XP license agreement and press F8 to agree.

7. You will ask you if you want to REPAIR or REINSTALL the operating system. It will appear like this. Just press ESC to proceed.

A. To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
B. To continue installing fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC.

From repairing your operating system, it will not removed all your files and other software installed in your computer including your hardware drivers installed. Just fixing the operating system.

For reinstalling the operating system, you need to back up all you files because it will wipe out all you datas in your computer.

8. After that, it ask you where partition you want to install the operating system. The message will display like this :

C : Partition1 [NTFS]
D : Partition2 [NTFS]
Unpartitioned Space

Use the directional key to navigate and choose C: Partition1 if you want reinstalling Windows XP and press enter.

If you want clean copy of Windows XP, you need to delete both partition by pressing L and install clean copy at Unpartitioned space. By these procedure, you will have C: drive only. D: Drive is delete.

9. After choosing the desire partition. this will appear :

* Format the partition using NTFS files system
* Format the partition using the NFTS file

I suggest to choose the first line which is the quick format. The 2nd line take too much time to install the operating system. Press to initiate the installation and it will be finish and reboot automatically. PART OF WINDOWS INSTALLATION IS FINISHED.

If you had interrupted installation which is asking for certain driver file, your CD installer maybe damage which cause files to be unreadable. Try to replace the new Windows XP installer CD to proceed and until finished installing OS.

15. Then, set your date and time zone and click next.

16. Then, it will ask you for workgroup and computer domain, just leave it and click next.

17. Now wait until the installation process end and it will again restart automatically.

18. Again, do not boot from CD and display setting will appear. Just click OK.

19. welcom to Microsoft Windows screen will appear. Just click next.

20. Helps protect your PC will appear and choose Turn on Automatic Updates ( Only if you install genuine Windows XP). Otherwise, I suggest to choose "Not right not" if you are installing copy only of Windows XP.

My System is affected by virus.when i format the total hard drive still it can run within some days.how 2 remove this virus manually or help 2 format the drive using any bootable software...plz...

I suggest booting from a bootable cdrom disk, instead of a floppy disk, USB drive, etc. Everything except the cdrom can quite easily become infected with a virus just by plugging it into the computer. You MUST create the bootable cdrom from a KNOWN clean computer! If you try to create one from the infected system, you can almost be assured you will only create an infected cdrom!

If you don't have a way of creating a bootable cdrom, try booting your system from your Windows installation cd / dvd. Do a complete format before the install and then SHUT DOWN the computer! Do NOT just reboot and continue with the installation of the OS. Viruses are "memory resident" in that they load themselves up into RAM when the computer boots and will remain there until the machine does a complete shut down. I recommend you shutdown (i.e., turn off the computer) and restart the machine a couple of times AFTER doing the format to be assured that the virus is eradicated.

Once you are satisfied the virus no longer exists, you can go ahead with a new install of the OS. The FIRST thing to do before loading ANY of your personal files back onto the computer is to install a virus scanning software -- and make sure it is active and the virus pattern files are current. After scanning the hard drive for problems and finding none, can you go ahead with the installation / restore of your personal files.

Chances are pretty good that the reason the computer runs OK for a couple of days and then the virus reappears is that a file you have installed or copied over from your backup is infected. Each time you launch the program / file, the virus gets installed and the cycle starts again.

Sata hdd windows dell recovery cd will partition install windows

The system is originally designed to use IDE HDD, make sure the necessary chages for Sata HDD are made in the BIOS, next make sure the Recovery disc is fine without any scratches. You can order a new Windows OEM recovery disc by calling Dell tech support (1-800-624-9896-US) and try installing the OS. The disc will cost you not more than $12.

Reading Data CD's

Hmmm... were the cd's originally burned using that laptop? Or were they burned on a different pc?

It could be as simple as your cdrom doesnt like something about those cd's. Or it could be a flakey cdrom.

My suggestion, try reburning them to a different brand of disk using a different pc. Then see if your laptop will read them. If not, may need to replace the cdrom. Though it reads commercially manufactured cd's, if its flakey, it will have problems reading custom made cd's.

Other option, get a usb flash drive and copy those files from that cd, in a different pc, to the flash drive.

You don't need any special drivers or programs in order to copy mp3 files from a cd to your hard drive. Yet, you would need something in order to play them. Which media player does just fine.

Flakey cdrom or flakey cd's... hope this helps.
