Sometimes the blockage is within the hose itself and not easy to spot. The only thing that can keep a vacuum from sucking is somekind of blockage. It is rare that a motor have lost power because of a short thats why it is not sucking, and it would be very obvious because you would smell something burning.

How to Fix Vacuum That Lost Suction
If there's ample suction but the machine won't pick up material, check the hose for blockages. Disconnect the hose from the vacuum cleaner and inspect it for any cracks or holes. If any are found, use duct tape to repair them - it might not look great, but it does the job! Where there's a blockage in the vacuum cleaner, clean it out by pushing a long, thin object like a broom handle through the entire length of thre hose. You can then reconnect the hose and try the vacuum again. It's worth checking the hoses a few times every year for cracks or splits.
If everything else appears to be fine but the vacuum still won't pick up, take a look at the brushes. Turn the vacuum cleaner upside down and clean hair and other material from the brushes, especially at the sides.

Vacuum relief valve

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC24 includes a suction relief valve. This helps protect the motor when too little airflow is passing through the vacuum. This could be due to a blockage, or because the two lifetime washable filters are overdue for wash.

To check for blockages, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc24new/dc24-multi-floor/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usualdc24

In normal use we recommend washing both filters at least once a month, using cold water without detergent. Allow at least 24 hours for both filters to dry completely before replacing them in the machine:.

I'm confident that washing both filters, and removing any blockages from the airways, will resolve the issue. However if you'd like any guidance from our experts after you've given this a try, you're welcome to call the Dyson Customer Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Suction from top of hose not from head

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC25 has suction through the wand and hose but not through the cleaner head, it's likely there's a blockage in the cleaner head or the airway. To check for this, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc25/dc25-irsvsye/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual/how-to-wash-filters/check-suction

It's also a good idea to give both of the lifetime filters a wash , as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for both filters to dry completely before replacing them:

I'm confident this will resolve the issue, but if you continue to have issues after giving this a try, we're happy to provide further assistance. You can reach the Dyson Customer Helpline by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Dc 14 does not suck very well when on carpets massive suction through wand

Hi Diane, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC14 isn't picking up well on carpets despite having strong suction through the wand, there are some simple troubleshooting checks you can run through. I understand you've checked for blockages and washed the filter, but there may be something you've overlooked. These checks will help you determine if there's a blockage or another issue that may be causing this: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc14/dc14-all-floors/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual/how-to-wash-filters/no/loss-of-performance

If you'd like further advice after giving each of these diagnostic checks a try, please give our experts a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Sucking and blowing sound went switched on

Hi Steve, it's Jack at Dyson.

From what you've described, it sounds as if the suction relief valve may be activating. This opens to let more airflow into the motor if the machine is used when blocked, or if the washable filters are very overdue for a clean.

In normal use, both filters should be washed using cold water without detergent, at least once a month. Allow at least 24 hours for both filters to dry completely before replacing them in the machine.

To check your DC24's cleaner head and airways for blockages, please follow each of the steps shown in our online Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc24new/dc24-multi-floor/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usualdc24

Why is my dyson dc25 spitting hair back out?

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

If any debris is coming back out of your DC25's cleaner head, it's very likely that you have a blockage in the cleaner head or the airway it's connected to. To check the cleaner head itself, please follow the steps shown in the video below:

To check for blockages in the airway and throughout the rest of the vacuum, please follow the simple checks shown in our online Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc25/dc25-irsvsye/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual/how-to-wash-filters/check-suction

Pulsing then stops

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Dyson Digital Slim cordless vacuums such as DC44 Animal are engineered to make a pulsing noise to warn you if the machine has a blockage. This can occur if an item too large for the machine has been vacuumed up accidentally. It's easily resolved by checking the floor tool, wand and bin inlet: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc44/dc44-animal/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual-dc44/no-resolved-redirect-to-check-the-wand/check-wand

I'm confident following these steps will resolve the issue, but for any further guidance from our experts you can reach us directly by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

My Carpet cleaner isn't sucking up the dirty water. Squirting out the clean water and cleaner just fine. What's wrong?

Fairly common problem... inside the dirty water container there is a red flap that has a filter, clean it off and you are good to go.
