SOURCE: Rinnai fan stops turning.

You can reach the fan wheel by using a can of compressed air normally used to clean your compute keyboard. Make sure you hold a vacuum wand close to the heater when doing this to collect the debris. Using a small coffee stir straw, lubricate the end of the fan motor shaft with light motor oil. This will keep the motor alive for a bit longer.

SOURCE: My Rinnai 650 Cosyglow Natural

This heater has a safety valve on the power on/main gas valve button: after the burner is lit you must keep the button pressed for about 10 seconds to allow a sensor to heat up and trigger the thermostat to keep the valve open. This safety has been implemented that if in case the flame dies out the gas doesn't keeps escaping, putting you and your house in danger.
If after 10 seconds when you take your finger off the button the flame dies out it means that the safety thermostat has failed and it will have to be replaced. Because it's a gas run device i strongly suggest you call a professional for that - the repair will cost you roughly $200.

SOURCE: rinnai reh15-217 burners cut out automatically

If you're saying the burners turn OFF after 1/2 hour, but the pilot light stays lit ... I'd have to assume that the automatic thermostat control on the heater, turned the burners OFF, because the temperature you had it set on had been reached. The real question (at least for me) is are you allowing enough time for the temperature to drop and the heater to turn back ON automatically?

I have a rinnai energy saver 556f our power blew out and it knocked out all our appliances.i am trying to get my rinnai to stay lite but the pilot wont stay on.it goes on for about 3 seconds and then cuts...

Patrick,

Your 556 does not have a pilot light. When you try to start look into the window, you should see an arcing, this is the igniter. With a power outage there is no telling what may have happened. With only limited knowledge of a gas heater you should call a Rinnai service guy.

Good luck,

Tom

Hi.

Replace the flame sensor, if that does not fix the problem, check the thermostats, if it cuts off in ten minutes and then restarts when cooling down, then it is either flame sensor or thermostats.

I have a Rennai Cosyglow RE650 that cuts out after a very short time and will only stay on if you hold the ignition lever down.

Sounds like the thermocouple needs changing. This is the flame failure device, they can burn out after a few years. Recommend getting a technican to fix it but you could ask him to make sure he has a thermocouple for this model on his first visit to save paying for two calls.

When in the shower, the heat fluctuates from hot to lukewarm over a 10 second cycle. The water will not stay at a constant temperature.

this is usually a problem with all tankless water heaters.
the solution is to install a small buffer tank (5 or 10 gallon electric water heater) after the Rinnai. this will give the water something to mix in. it will solve your problem.

did you make sure to use a 3/4" gas line to the unit. not just 3/4" at the unit itself. sometimes when there is not enough gas, the unit will act funny and cycle from hot to warm or even cold. Make sure you check the gas line size, its very important.

I have a rinnai cosy glow 650 when i push the start button it glows up but soon as i let the button go it stops glowing

The cosyglow heaters have 2 thermocouples in series to sense flame and keep the thing going. If either of them is split, cracked, or even dirty, it will not stay alight. Get it serviced/checked out by qualified people.
