Follow these steps:

Shut off tablet
press the volume minus button and the power button @ start up
tmax logo shows up and then a android menu
select factory reset
Once complete, reboot
wait 4-5minute, and the tablet should be re-configured for you.

You will most likely need to factory reset the tablet. **Note** This will delete everything stored on the tablet and reset it back to basic settings. Do you know what model it is?
Try this.

Turn off the tablet.
Turn the tablet back on while holding the power and the back button.
After the machine starts release the power button but continue to hold the back button.
Once you get the android screen use the back button to go down to reset #3.
Acknowledge the reset by hitting the power button.
After it says all data is rest hit #1 to restart tablet and it will be back at factory settings.

My son put a pattern lock on his tablet and he cannot remember what it is so we are trying to reset it so he can get back on it but to no prevail

After pressing the reset button on my acer a200 iconia tablet it freezes on start up with only "iconic tab" showing on a black screen, what do I need to do to to restore my tablet to working order

Since you tried to reset the tablet, you can try doing the hard reset. Just to let you know, performing hard reset deletes the data from your tablet.
