Yeah that is completely normal. To many hard disk manufacturers, a Gigabyte is always equal to 1000 Megabytes. but for Operating Systems [that work in binary] a Gigabyte would 1024 MB. And this reading difference in defining a GB has been around for a long time. So for an OS to call an HDD '320GB' that Disk would have to accommodate 327,680MB...Makes sense?

That is because the manufacturers do not use the proper calculation for working out the sizes.
1GB = 1024 x 1024 Kbytes or 1,073,741,824bytes (10243, 230).
The disk manufacturers all call 1,000,000,000 a gigabyte - so your 320gigabyte disk is actually 320,000,000,000 bytes / 1,073,741,824 = 298Gb.

Why a wd elements 320gb external hard drive only registers 298 gb when connected to computer?

Because the remaining space is for the file allocation tables. That tells the computer where to look on the hard drive to find the files. It's like an index for the hard drive.

If the Hard drive is 320gb then why does it show up on my computer as 298gb?

This is called file system over head. When you "format" a drive in Windows for example, the operating system uses a certain portion of the space for allocating the file system, Master File Table, and partition information. So, the 298 you see, is the formatted capacity. The larger the drive, the more "reserved space" is used. If you find this helpful, please leave positive feedback.

Superloader3 , don't recognize real capacity of tape

this may be a limitation on your motherboard. please check if your motherboard supports this much capacity. If you have another pc or laptop that is about a year or two, check if they would recognize the the capacity of the drive correctly. if not you may want check with quantum about their drives.

My capacity genx 2gb usb chenge to 14 mb.when i connect flash disk i show cd drive added in my computer and capacity my flash disk cheng of 2 gb to 14 mb.plz help.my email shaab.a@nisoc.ir

This typically means the drive has gone bad. Try reformatting the USB drive. Some manufacturers also provide diagnostic/formatting tools on their website that might be able to fix it. But likely it will need replaced. Lucky 2GB USB drives now only run $7.99 or less.

My WD Elements won't let me store more then 300 GiG, even though the properties menu says I have 600 GiG left to store on. Comes up with an error message saying the disc is full.

Well, if it's a 320GB model, it's usable capacity will be around 300GB and that's it.
In the drive's properties, what's the percentage of used vs. total capacity?
Perhaps you are have compression turned on that reports higher capacity than actual? With music and video files, which don't compress at all practically, this is useless.
Also chances are, that you are misreading the free space information, look closely at the units in which it's shown.

Capactiy of external hardrive

That's normal. Storage manufacturers consider 1 GB at 1 billion bytes (1,000,000,000 bytes).

Computers, however, use base-2 arithmetic, and one kilobyte is 1024 bytes, one megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, and one gigabyte is 1024 megabytes. This all multiples to 1 gigabyte according to the computer is 1024^3 or 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Take 320,000,000,000 and divide it by 1,073,741,824 and you get 298.023223876953125, so your computer says your "320GB" drive is 298GB.

There's a standard for base-2 (binary) measurement terminology (gibibytes, mebibytes, kibibytes, etc), but few people seem to use it.

It has to do with the way computers count. Computers count in binary where we count in decimal.
Hard drive makers list there drives capacities in the decimal format, where windows lists it in it's binary format.
Wikipedia has a good explanation.

Also, the drive may have some preinstalled software on it that could be taking up a bit of space (it's usually not much).

HARD DISK CAPACITY PROBLEM

When your hard disk capacity says 320, that does not mean 320 GB fo free space, Total capacity is 320 GB, from this space required for the partition table, boot sector, etc will be taken, Dont worry only the available free space will be shown.

This is not a problem, so dont worry.
