The player can operate in either MSC or MTP mode.

MSC = Mass Storage Class, seeing the player as a removable disk.
In this mode you can transfer with copy and paste or drag and drop
method.
note
Before disconnecting in MSC mode always go through the icon right below "safely remove hardware": remove the player in the icon before taking out the USB cable.

MTP = Media Transfer Protocol, having the player connected in software
e.g. Windows Media Player.
note
Disconnect the player only after the dialog in the software tells you can disconnect the player or transfers have been finished.

USB connection mode can be set in the menu, it can be

MSC
MTP

2. Slide the hold switch to the direction of the REC button so an orange color would show putting the device on Hold.
3. Press and hold the left ( |<< ) button while connecting the device to the PC.

I put the usb port in the computer and it will say the computer has found new hardware and for me to install it when i do it will say hardware can't install. what do i do?

Selecting or switching automatically MTP < > MSC
Connecting the player before a media software program is installed, the player will connect as a flash drive also called removable disk in MSC mode.
There are 2 settings for connection mode in the player, MTP and MSC.
See page 36 of the manual for more information and how to set the USB mode:
http://www.cobyusa.com/files/manuals/MP705_MN.pdf

USB mode MTP
Install Windows Media Player 11 for MTP connection to the computer.
When needing a media player update from Microsoft see:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx

USB mode MSC
When you experience next making connection:
Connecting the device to the computer Wizard found new hardware pops up.
Only this time the Windows update searching for software will not work on automatic routine:
ending up with "Cannot Install this Hardware".

Solution:
Manual performing the wizard, setting the device to USB connection type:
1. Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software ?
Select "No, not this time".
[Next]
2. If your hardware came with an installation CD, or floppy disk, insert it now.
Select "Install from a list or specific location(Advanced)."
[Next]
3. Please use your search and installations options.
Select "Don't search I will choose the driver to install."
[Next]
4. Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware.
Select "USB Mass Storage Device."
[Finish]

Note: when using MSC mode always safely remove hardware, the players' removable disk. The icon in the right corner of the task bar.

How do i dowload music to my opal M4208GR

Manual for RCA Opal M4208GR:
http://www.voxxsupport.com/images/manuals/M4208GR/media/M4208GR_DOC_OM.pdf

This player has default setup MSC mode, seeing the player as a flash drive also called a removable disk.
MSC = Mass Storage Class
When seeing the player as a removable disk in Windows Explorer:
Drag and drop the song, with mp3 or wma format, into the Music folder on the player.
Note: some wma files may have DRM = Digital Rights Management. These files might be copied or transferred onto the player but cannot be started for playback.
Important: in MSC mode always safely remove hardware, the players' removable disk, at the bottom right corner of the task bar.

Transfers to the player can also be done with software like Windows Media Player 11, RCA easyRip or other software from music stores.
This can be done in MTP mode. MTP = Media Transfer Protocol.
How to switch to MTP mode, seeing the player as Media device:
In the players Menu go to Settings. Go to Protocol. Select MTP mode / switch from MSC mode to MTP mode.

An mtp device cannot start due error code 10 whats that

I solved the code 10 problem on my vista 64 by using Revo uninstaller on the next to highest level to remove Acronis 10.4942 After this all media readers appeared and worked. A later version of Acronis Emergency boot disk still works to backup/ restore my system

Can not download music to player.

Windows Media Player says that my ML638B is full but it’s actually empty. How do I fix this problem?

If this problem occurs then your ML638B needs to be formatted.

1. Connect your ML638B to your computer with Windows XP or later.
2. By default your computer will recognize ML638B as GPX MTP Device. Press the POWER button from top of your ML638B, to change it to USB mode connection. You will also see USB on the screen of ML638B.
3. ML638B will now mount 2 drives, one as Tools (as CD-Drive) and second as Removable Disk (Drive) – under My Computer on your Windows Desktop.
4. Right click your mouse and then select the Format option. When the Format Removable Disk window appears select the Start button to start formatting your MP3 player.

My sansa media converter did not detect my sansa e280

Set the device to MSC mode (default is Auto) in the USB properties on the Sansa device. This worked for me with a Sansa Fuze on Windows XP running Sansa Media Converter 1.0. Hope this helps.

Disconnecting player while in MTP mode

It is not designed to show up as a Removable Disk in MTP mode, therefore it wont show up in the Safely Disconnect Menu.

If you are using Windows Media Player to transfer, as soon as the SYNC is complete, it says "ok to disconnect". You can disconnect without any problems.

If you are using Rhapsody, or the Best Buy Digital Music Store, you can right click on the device in the Sources Menu and select Disconnect.

Best of Luck,

If you are using a front USB port on your computer, try using One in the rear that is connected directly to the motherboard. It worked on mine!
