Solution:

Try this:
turn off your TV at the mains and unplug it for at least two three hours after that time power up your TV it should degauss the tube at power up

If not:

Your TV has a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms.

Screen looks 3D
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed in but stationary.
Here is a quick test....
Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence or magic focus section
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
You can get a repair kit that includes all the parts from www.TvRepairKits.com.

Everything you need to fix it yourself. Its a fairly easy fix.

The color has gone crazy on you because your
    convergence IC's have gone bad.
These operate at a very high
temp, and usually only last 4-5 years.
    If you remove the
back of the set, you will want to look for the BIGGEST heatsink in there, on
that heatsink, you will see 2 lage IC's , probably STK392-110, or STK392-150's
you can go on ebay to order the new ones, but MAKE SURE they are Genuine IC's and not counterfiet cheapies. the cheap ones may only last 2 months..
You will also need some "Heat transfer paste" - you can pick
    this up at radio shack.
Once you remove the old IC's, test
all the large resistors near them.. pull one side of the resistor out of the
board so you can check it out of circuit. they will usually have the value in
Ohms, printed directly on the resistor, but you may have to use the resistor
color code to find out what value they are....However, usually if there is any
damage, the resistor will look like it has been HOT or fried. replace the IC's
and any bad resistors, and you should be good to go.
    If
after replacing the IC's and any defective resistors, the convergence is still
bad, make sure to use a multimeter to check ALL fuses on the boards, ---
sometimes when the IC's go, they will take out a fuse to the convergence power
supply. If you find any bad fuses, replace them accordingly!
    Hope that helps!

My Sony DVD player is only showing colors in green and purple hues. Could it be a connection problem?

Yes. Could be the color signal jacks in the back. Make sure you have them plugged in properly, green for green, blue for blue, and red for red.

The color seems to be off. No red, and lots of purple. This is a Toshiba 57H81 wide screen big box tv. It was purchased in 2002.

Could be a bad board within the tv but it is sometimes the source input meaning it could be dvd player, cable/satellite box, etc causing the loss of color but it is unlikely. I have one of these tvs and they use red green and blue projectors to reproduce the colors so when the red projector fails then you get purple which is green and blue colors combined without the red. I have found it to be sometimes a bad connection inside the tv and I found insects such as roaches inside others. Using extreme caution when opening the rear cover of any tv due to dangerous and fatal high voltage. You might find that simply cleaning out the inside of tv and reseating all the connectors might resolve your issue otherwise you would have haul this tv to a repair shop where you pay half the price of a new flat screen lcd for just repairing this tv which will probaly have another color go out next month.

You're connecting to an HD connection that's why you are seeing the purple and green.

You should have 3 composite inputs, ie. yellow, white, and green on the back, and on the side in addition to the HD ones you are currently plugged into.
