You can also put WEP password to prevent others to connect to it.
tell your son to scan for network access again, then chose the name of the wireless connection you chose with the password.

Windows 7 and D-Link DSL-2640R router. I have recently bought a new laptop which supports windows 7, the talktalk cd will not work so i do not know my routers settings. Well my internet connection always...

Hi
I presume that your internet was working fine before you bought your new laptop. Unless you've done something to change it it should still be working as before.
You shouldn't need a CD - if you think about it you don't need a CD when you log in in Starbucks so why should you need one at home?
The only thing you need to know is the router's wireless name; Talktalk 12345etc, and its password - which is the password your son is using.
I can't explain why you can't connect when your son is connected - as the router should be able to host 253 laptops (very very slowly mind) - unless the router has been set with an access list that only allows his laptop to connect.

Getting my router to work at its peak...

I suppose the new laptop has Vista on it.
therefore
find out the settings for the new provider and connect to the router with ethernet cable.
type in the browser address bar the address of the router interface:
192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 usually.
put in the password (usually default is admin)and copy the settings in the corresponding fields,
usually there's a wizard for this.
the make sure to go in the wireless settings and set the wireless to enabled. find an option like DHCP server and make sure it's enabled. you can enter a passcode for your wireless, but it's not required, you can also set it to unsafe mode...
the you should be able to go to:
start>control panel>network center>connect to.
and connect to the wireless network
the you are probably good and should be surfing the web

Securing our wireless connection

Hi … perhaps I can help..

There may be more than one way to set to set up security on this router. However, most routers accept manual configuration. There are four main steps to this:

1)Login to your router
2)Change the router password
3)Change the SSID, or network name

4)Enable WPA encryption.

Here the details (based on the Netgear Rangemax manual - if this is not your model, please check back):

Important note: use a wired (ethernet) connection to the router to set up wireless security.

1) Login to your router.
You have probably done this already, but here it is again for clarity. Type the router address in the address bar of a web browser. The default for this model is http://192.168.1.1 or you could try www.routerlogin.com (or .net)

You are prompted for the username and password. If you have not changed the password, enter username: admin and password: password

This should bring up the configuration screen/user interface.

2) Change the router login password.
Under Maintenance in the left hand menu, go to Set Password. Set and confirm a new password. Click ‘Apply’ when finished.
Tip: write this on a label and stick it to the router.

3) Change the SSID (network name):
Under 'Setup', go to Wireless Settings. You should see the Wireless Network Name,or SSID, at the top. Change this from the default, NETGEAR, to anything you like – as long as you can remember it. It is case sensitive, and you can use up to 32 letters – but don’t use something that could identify you, or your location. Click ‘Apply’ when finished.

4) Enable encryption
Still in the Wireless Settings menu option, you should see the Wireless Security Options section. You have a number of options for encryption. Select WPA-PSK: though strictly speaking, the correct option depends on your wireless adapter. However, this is a good choice to start with.

Under Passphrase or WPA Key you should enter a long password, or passphrase, between 8 and 63 letters/numbers long. This can be any series of letters/ numbers, or you can use a phrase with numbers ( eg - 456HapPY2009toyou8892). It is case sensitive.

Note down the passphrase, or network key, carefully. You will need this to connect wirelessly. (The network key may also be called a WPA shared key, PSK, pre-shared key, authentication key, WPA key, WPA-PSK, security key). Click ‘Apply’ when finished.

That's it, you have done enough to secure your network, and can close the screen.

There are further security options to enable if you wish, but these three are the most important.

When you next connect wirelessly, you'll see the router with its new name in your 'available wireless networks'. When you attempt to connect, you are asked for the network key you set in Step 4. If all goes well, you can then save this and will connect automatically in future.

Hope this helps you. Please come back to Fixya if this doesn't work or if you need help with any of it.

Will not connect to internet

Hi leapam31,

What your router is asking for is a secure wep login. You can provide your partner this number by loging into your router, and go to the securty section of the menu, and generate a new wep key. It will then generate a key, that you should right down, because this new key may block out the existing two computers that already have access. When you log into the router on those machine, you may need to put the same key in.

Good Luck

Mark

Go into your network settings and disable the ethernet and enable the wireless, you can also press Function F2 to enable wireless on a laptop. You may also try setting up wireless connection from the network settings if it still will not connect. Also you should be sure the network is not secured, and that your browser is told to never dial a connection.

Is the wireless enabled for your router? Try typing 192.168.0.1 and use the default password to access your router settings. Check if wireless is enabled, SSID is broadcasted, and security is off or properly configured.

Wireless internet access

Mandy,
The password is a WPA Shared Key. The secret key will be shown in your routers security or advanced or network configuration page.......if you forgot the key then the best alternative will be to reset the router
you could simply create a new WPA-PSK and then setup each machine again that needs wireless access to your network.
