My Garmin GPSmap 76CSx will begin to start up, but as soon as you release the power button the screen fades away.

This problem can occur when the map file is corrupted or can't be read. Try putting your sd card in a reader and deleting the GMAPSUPP file (in the GARMIN folder) and fitting it back in your device. Then reload the map from Mapsource onto your handheld.

Could not unlock maps

Hello,

If you are having troubles accessing the pre loaded mapping then you may need a firmware update, if these are maps that you have installed make sure they are compatible authorized maps.
If you try this and all fails contact Garmin customer support.

Hope this helps!

Problem with our Garmin you can turn it on and it will not do anything but display Garmin name and will not turn off. Have changed batteries, any ideas???

It sounds like your Garmin has a corrupt file or file system. This is common when using bird's eye imagery with unsuspected shut-downs.
Try doing a soft reset of the Garmin:Warning: This procedure will delete information (waypoints, routes, tracks, etc) from your GPS and settings may be set back to factory defaults.

1. Power the unit OFF
2. Hold down the two Soft Keys for 2 seconds
3. While continuing to hold the 2 Soft Keys down, press and hold down the Power button for an additional 5 seconds
4. Release all buttons, and select YES to the prompt asking "if you want to clear all user data?"

This form of reset does not seem to reset all of the settings to factory defaults, just a few of the basics like Time Zone and Language, the remainder of the settings are still taken from your existing profile files.

Once you have completed a reset remember to place the Colorado outside in a stationary position for 20 minutes in plain view of the sky so that it can rebuild the almanac before using it again.

Note: Holding down both soft keys and the select button in a similar fashion seems to do a similar reset to the Colorado. This may be a master reset.

If the problem still persists, try this as a last ditch effort.
Warning: This procedure may delete information (waypoints, routes, tracks, etc) from your GPS and settings may be set back to factory defaults.

If you can't get your CO to start properly and it will not go into USB storage mode when connected to your computer you can try this as a last ditch recovery. It worked on a 400t that would freeze when loading maps and soft/hard resets didn't not work, I've also used it to recover a Colorado which refused to boot because of a bad gpx file.

First you'll also need to download file below. Once you've downloaded this file unzip it into a directory such as C:Garmin on your PC.

On your PC click the Start menu, select "Run..." and type "cmd" where it says open. A black window with a DOS command prompt should appear. At the command prompt enter the following command:

.text { font-family: monospace; }.text .imp { font-weight: bold; color: red; }.text span.xtra { display: block; } > cd c:Garmin
At the next command prompt type the following command without hitting enter:

.text { font-family: monospace; }.text .imp { font-weight: bold; color: red; }.text span.xtra { display: block; } > Updater.exe 066101000230.rgn
Now back to your GPS.

Press and hold the "up button" on the Rock'n Roller while you plug the CO into the USB cable. Wait 10-20 seconds while still holding the "up button". You should see a Garmin banner and nothing else. At this point you can hit enter on your PC to execute the updater command. Once the updater runs you will need to select you Colorado under USB and hit enter. This should perform the update (you may get a warning about loading an older version of software). You should receive a message that the update was successful and the Colorado will reboot.

Once the reboot is complete the "Loader" banner should appear near the top of the CO screen after about 30 seconds. Release the "up button" and on your PC you should be able to see the Colorado as a USB drive.

You can now attempt to fix the files on your Colorado which are preventing it from starting. If you've recently added or changed files these are good places to start. Deleting gpx files and/or replacing map img files with your backup copies may resolve the issue as well.

Wanted to up date the maps on my garmin nuvi 260w. I went through all the steps on the garmin website it the deleted all the maps on the system that where already installed

Do you have Lifetime maps? If so, carefully repeat the process again. Remember it takes up to 5 hours to completely load maps etc. depending on your computer.
If you had any power issues during the load you might have corrupted some files.

Have a Garmin Oregon 400t. It does not want to recognise maps stored on the SD card. If I connect the Garmin to computer, I can read the files on the SD card but when I look to select the maps, they are...

Memory Maps are for PDA's only, not for Garmin GPS units. If you purchased these from Memory Map, contact the company and request a refund due to hardware incompatibility. Maps for the Oregon are from Garmin (purchase) or Ibycus (free).

Lost maps off garmin nuvi 660

Please delete any MP3 files or extra vehicle icons on your Nuvi. The map file is 1 GB in size. There is a possibility that your Nuvi's directory is corrupted and/or there are hidden garbage files on the directory that are taking up your storage space. You can look for these using windows explorer but don't delete anything if you don't know what you are doing.

I have a garmin oregon 400t and I cant see the elevation lines, or topographical lines

You may be in an area where there is not enough topography for the topo lines to show up. Pan tothe Smokey Mountains and see if they show up.
