The jackshaft must be installed back onto the starter shaft prior to installing the jackshaft with the shallow side of the coupling going/facing towards the jackshaft and also facingthe jackshaft splines. Remember to reinstall the coupling retaining ring if it was removed. ALSO, be sure to install the coupling on the starter output shaft with the counter bore facing the jackshaft. THEN put the spring inside the coupling and install the pinion gear on the shaft put the lockplate and the thrust washer on the bolt and put the bolt in place in the jackshaft. If you removed the retaining ring put it back on shaft and then slide the jackshaft assembly back into position in the inner primary. In order to hold the lockplate and thrust washer in place be certain that the lockplate tab is properly in the keyway. THEN, having aligned the lockplate tab and thrust washer properly in the slot with the jackshaft keyway screw the jackshaft bolt into the starter shaft and while holding the pinion gear in position tighten the bolt to 84-108 in-lbs (9.5-12.2 Nm) and bend the locking tab against bolt head.

How do you Replace starter drive on 1984 harley fxr

Sorry 1984 is back beyond my expertise and/or knowledge but later model years jackshaft might be somewhat similar:

Disconnect the negative battery cable. THEN remove the primary cover. (If you are only going to service the items from the bolt through to the spring it is not necessary to remove clutch but if it is desired to replace the coupling and/or the retaining ring it will also require starter removal. So, bearing that in mind, if necessary, next remove the clutch assembly. THEN while holding the pinion gear in place remove the jackshaft bolt, the lockplate and the thrust washer and remove the jackshaft from the inner primary as an assembly. THEN remove the pinion gear from the jackshaft and then remove the coupling and the spring. The spring and the retaining ring are inside the coupling. Replace the retaining ring if deemed necessary. ALSO if the coupling is forced through the primary case oil seal you will necessarily have to replace the seal as it will be ruined. THEN remove the coupling from the starter shaft and if needed replace the retaining ring. THEN reinstall the clutch assembly etc. and the primary case etc using new gaskets as required etc., refill the primary with oil, reconnect the negative battery cable and check to be sure you have not forgotten anything.

2003 flstf starter installation

I assume that you want information on how to replace the starter on a Fat Boy. First, disconnect and remove the battery. Then drain the oil from the primary and remove the outer primary cover. Take the small bolt out of the starter jackshaft and remove the jackshaft. Then go to the right side of the bike and remove part or all of the exhaust system as necessary to gain access to the starter. Take the bolts and mounting hardware loose from the oil tank so that you can lift the tank slightly. You should not have to remove the oil lines. Take the battery cable loose from the starter and unplug the single wire at the solenoid part of the starter. Remove the two large socket head bolts that hold the starter on. When the starter comes off, there is a coupling that connects the starter with the jackshaft. Mark the direction it goes back in or make sure the counterbored end of the coupling goes towards the jackshaft. Reinstall the starter in reverse of these procedures.

How do i take the starter out???

To take the starter out of you Dyna, first disconnect the battery. Drain the primary and take everything off that will hinder you from getting the outer primary cover off. Remove the inner primary cover. Remove the small bolt that holds the starter jackshaft on and remove the jackshaft. Then go to the right side of the bike. Remove the exhaust system and anything else in the way of getting to the starter. Remove the battery cable at the starter and the single small wire at the solenoid. Take the two large socket head bolts out that hold the starter on. When you remove the starter, there is a coupling that connects the starter and the starter jackshaft. The counterbored end of the coupling goes towards the jackshaft when you reassemble it.

How to install starter on 2001 fxdwg

To install the starter on your FXDWG, first, disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Then drain the primary and take off anything that is in the way of getting the primary cover off. Take the primary cover off. Bend the bend tab on the bolt that holds the starter jackshaft on and take the bolt and the jackshaft out. Then go to the right side of the bike. You'll have to take part or all of the exhaust system off to get the rear exhaust pipe out of the way. Take the small wire off the solenoid of the starter and the battery cable off. The nut that holds the battery cable on is a 14mm nut. Take the two large socket head bolts out that hold the starter on and slide the starter out. There is a coupling on the starter that connects the starter and the jackshaft. You must put it back in with the starter. Mark the coupling or make sure the counterbored end faces the jackshaft.

How to change the starter on a 1997 dyna low rider

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the primary case. Remove the primary cover and take the bolt out of the jackshaft and remove it. There is a coupling between the starter motor and the jackshaft. It should not come out with the jackshaft but when you take the starter out, it will come out with it. Remember, the counterbored end goes towards the jackshaft. Put the coupling on the starter before installing it on the bike. On the right side of the bike, you'll probably have to remove some or all of the exhaust system. Take anything else off that may be in your way. Take the battery cable and the single wire that goes to the solenoid off of the starter and remove the two large socket head bolts that holds the starter on.

How to remove starter 1995 heritage softail

To remove the starter on you Softail, first disconnect the negative side of the battery.

Then drain the primary and remove any footboards, shifters, ect. so that you can get the outer primary cover off. Once the cover is off, remove the small bolt that holds the starter jackshaft on and remove the jackshaft. The jackshaft coupling may come out with the jackshaft. Mark which way the coupling goes back in as there is a snap ring on the inside that is not in the center.

Now, go to the right side of the bike and remove the exhaust system, and remove the bolts that hold the oil in. Do not take the tank out but you need to be able to lift the tank just a bit. Remove the battery cable from the starter using a 12mm wrench. There are two large bolts that hold the starter into the inner primary, remove these two bolts and unplug the small wire at the top of the solenoid and the starter will come out.

Its a custom build with an 80 inch Evo 5 speed trans Im running a 2.0kw buletpruf starter 66 tooth ring gear 9 tooth jackshaft setup. I press the starter button the bendix will engage 1-2 times and...

Check the coupling and he circlip that's inside of it that connects the starter to the jackshaft. If this coupling is stripped out, it will allow the starter shaft to spin inside the coupling while the jackshaft remains still unscrewing the bolt. Otherwise, I'd put a new lock lockplate on the screw along with a drop of Loctite #242 (medium hold blue) and torque the bolt to specs. Allow time for the Loctite to set before attempting to start the engine. You must have a belt drive on the bike for the bolt to drop out on the floor. On a standard bike, you don't have enough support on the jackshaft to start the engine without the outer primary cover on it.

Good luck
