The battery can be replaced. There is a single AA NiCd battery w/ tabs soldered into the main circuit board.
To open up the trimmer, first take the silver screw out (located near the lower back side). Then pull the trim guard off the top (should come off easily). Next, the rubber-like ring used for adjusting the trim height needs to be pulled off -- this can be difficult but just work your way around and ease it off. Finally, the metal clip on the end of the trimming head needs to be removed, and the plasic case can then be popped open, revealing the circuit board.

If you're not comfortable soldering or disassembling it, it can likely be done at a local Batteries Plus store.

Just want to add that when you work the rubber-like ring off, a small chrome-metal piece might fall out - it's smaller than a pinky nail and has a little spring attached to it. If if falls out, just put it back in before putting the rubber ring back on. It goes into a little groove on the bottom of the device (the concave side of the handle's curve).

Also - when taking the ring off - two plastic tabs in the casing broke off. Not the end of the world. When it's all back together, when the trim height is at "9" you have to push the trim guide back down to get it going again properly.

MrGypsy was right - that rubber ring is veeery tough to remove.

Norelco T870 is apparently a bit different from the T860. There is no silver screw near the lower back side and no metal clip on the end of the trimming head. The rubber-like ring can be removed easily by rotating it to the right place. Two metal parts with springs and a plastic part will fall out but can easily be replaced. With the ring out of the way the top half of the case can be pried upward making the circuit board and batteries accessible. There are 2 Ni-Cd batteries soldered in place, 1.2V, 600 mAh. Hbrian, thanks for your solution and your picture. I followed ur instructions and with a lot of force opened up the T870, much more than I expected. Attached pic shows it completely apart. I hope totalvac.com has battery all ready to be soldered in. Retiredlucky

Just try pulling off the metal clip holding the blades first. Mine was chocked full of bristles. Bit like an insane hamsters cage. So jammed in fact that this was stopping the motor from rotating, and giving the impression that the battery was flat

I have a Norelco 4845 XL rechargeable razor that has not been used for about 8-10years. I took it apart and the batteries seem to be coroded around the terminals. What can I use to clean the terminals...

It would not be a good idea to try to use the shaver with those batteries...even if you cleaned them. If you intend to use the shaver, you should replace the batteries. You will find correct batteries at shaversource.com

How do i replace the battery on a norelco t860

mcdevito75 here, It may not be possible to change the battery as 1 system has the batteries soldered to a circuit board, and you"ll need a set of trox screwdrivers to remove the back cover, try lifting the shaver head to access the back cover screws, also refer to Norelco.com for relaceing batteries.

Norelco 5822 XL - need new battery, but can't determine how to take apart!

There are just two screws on the back. Remove the screws to take off the back cover. You can then access the batteries.

You will find replacement batteries at shaveroutlet.com. See link below
