An operating system "OS" or "DOS"

Operating Systems Means, Tips & Tools.Microsoft Windows Server 2008 is the company's latest server operating system. Officially launched in February 2008, Windows Server 2008 is the successor to Microsoft's previous server OS, Windows Server 2003.
"The other is Disk Operating System, in a general sense, DOS refers to just about any operating system. More commonly, it describes the operating system Microsoft developed in 1981 for IBM's line of personal computers. Though syntactically distinct, DOS shares similarities with a Unix shell. It has a command-line interface and analogs to many common Unix commands. However, DOS is a 16-bit, single-user operating system that does not support multi-tasking. It is far easier to administer than Unix, but less powerful. Compared to graphical interfaces such as Windows and Mac OS X, it's also not particularly user-friendly."
An operating system sometimes abbreviated as "OS".Operating System is the program that being initially loaded into the computer by a boot program or manages all the other programs in a computer. The other programs are called applications or application programs. The application programs make use of the operating system by making requests for services through a defined application program interface (API). In addition, users can interact directly with the operating system through a user interface such as a command language or a graphical user interface (GUI).
An operating system performs these services for applications:
  1. In a multitasking operating system where multiple programs can be running at the same time, the operating system determines which applications should run in what order and how much time should be allowed for each application before giving another application a turn.
  2. It manages the sharing of internal memory among multiple applications.
  3. It handles input and output to and from attached hardware devices, such as hard disks, printers, and dial-up ports.
  4. It sends messages to each application or interactive user (or to a system operator) about the status of operation and any errors that may have occurred.
  5. It can offload the management of what are called batch jobs (for example, printing) so that the initiating application is freed from this work.
  6. On computers that can provide parallel processing, an operating system can manage how to divide the program so that it runs on more than one processor at a time.
All major computer platforms (hardware and software) require and sometimes include an operating system. Linux, Windows 2000, VMS, OS/400, AIX, and z/OS are all examples of operating systems.

How to Run Turbo Pascal Full Screen mode on Windows 7

Now that's a program I've not worked with in a while ;-) I haven't used it since my early high school days in the 1990s. Turbo is a really old application that has been around for ages- unfortunately, being as such, it is only capable of developing 16-bit DOS applications, which has, for better or worse, gone the way of the dinosaur. In the x64-bit versions of Windows Vista and 7, all 16-bit native support has actually gone out the window in favor of 32-bit and 64-bit application development. This is why DosBox was invented- it is a true 16-bit DOS environment (much like command.com and CMD.exe used to be) that is capable of running all the older DOS programs that are no longer compatible with Windows.
When you run Turbo from the DOSbox program, press ALT-ENTER and it will fullscreen whatever you're working with.
Hope this helps,
- Vern

I recently had a HD crash and have replaced it with another HD using the same Windows XP OS. While trying to reload programs that were on the old HD to the replacement, some of the programs get this error...

I always receive a "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT" error message.

“C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-
DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘Close’ to terminate the application.”

This error message is not caused by the installation CD-ROM, but rather by the
“Autoexec.nt” system file. Windows is unable to find this file when launching the
installation CD-ROM, the file most likely having been deleted by another application.

To resolve this problem, proceed as follows:
1. Go to “C:\Windows\repair” and find the file “Autoexec.nt”.
2.Copy this file to “C:\Windows\system32”.
3.Right-click the file “Autoexec.nt” that you have just copied, and select
“Properties”.
4.Tick the “Read-only” box and then click “OK”.

Good luck!

Where in the USA is carmen sandiego doesn't seem to load under vista properly? resolution and quicktime not functioning at all.

Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego I believe is an old DOS game. It won't run properly in Vista but if you use a DOS emulator then you can properly run the game in vista cause your fooling the program into thinking that its running in the old DOS environment.

Try DOSBOX, its a dos emulator that runs in windows and it allows you to run those old DOS games. Go to www.dosbox.com its a free program and it comes with instructions on how to use it.

16 Bit Vs 32 Bit Systems

You can't convert the program on the disk from 16 bit to 32 bit. However the 32 bit versions of Windows are supposed to include legacy support for 16 bit applications. What version of WIndows are you running? What's the exact errormessage you're getting?

However, I would recommend that you use a virtualization product called DOSBox. DOSBox is free software that runs older 16 bit applications on Windows (And other operating systems such as Linux) very well:

I need to download a program that requires windows and my computer says the program wont run in dos mode how do i get it to work?

if the program requires windows that means it was design to work with windows and not with DOS.. you may want to get an old version of the program that will actually run under DOS.. usually you may be able to do the opposite which is to run DOS program on windows.

if possible try to get a DOS version of the program you are trying to run, or better.. upgrade your operating sytem so you can run your program and possibly other DOS programs.

post the program you are looking to download and confirm what operation system you're running and I'll try to look for it with you.
