Your solution seems to be right on. The fan works but it will take some time to remove all the ice. I may have questions later. Bill

    Hello mgprice

The fan runs and the heater measures 35 ohms, so I think it is OK. The thermostat has no connectors and I would not know how to test it anyway. So I'm going to try to get a replacement. Do you know where I could order one over the internet?

Somewhere in the refrigerator there must be a circuit or circuit board that controls it. It seems possible that there is something wrong with this board and thus I will also need to replace this. Where would this board be located in the frig? Do you know where I could get this board or whatever is used to control the refrigerators functions? Is there a wiring diagram or schematic available from somwhere?

    Bill

    Excellent help. Thank You Mike.
I have been running the frig all weekend and just puled the cover off the cooling tube. There is no frost or ice build up.However I will buy a replacement thermostat to have it on hand when it stops working again. Bill

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: http://romulusappliance.com/manufacturers/maytag/refrigerators/575432.JPG defrost stat http://www.hotekalliance.com/UploadFiles/2008627111553382.jpg heaters http://www.applianceblog.com/archives/EvapMotor1018185.jpg evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck!

Hi bill, there is no need to change your main board if your Refridge even has one, You are going to need to change the defrost thermostat..you can get it at the following site...just enter the model number.

    http://www.repairclinic.com/appliance-pa...

Your defrost stat should be wired in series with the heater...

If you have any other questions feel free to comment again.

Just wanted to mention the main boards normally retail around $200 which is why we dont want to jump in changing that...Trust me bill i have been doing this for years...change the defrost stat and you will be good to go. if you are unsure how to change it i will give you step by step.

How can I get the refrigerator to cool (the freezer is working fine)?

Double check your refrigerator setting, it should be separate from the freezer. Check the vent is clean. If it is still not cooling, set freezer to warmer, turn off the unit, unplug, wait 3 minutes. Restart and see if the condenser starts

As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong. If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.
