AGR5844VDW oven not lighting

Most modern ovens have a glow bar ignitor, not a spark ignitor. It will glow a bright orange and then the oven valve will click open and allow gas through and the burner lights. Many gas ovens have a small shutoff handle located on the silver appliance regulator, which is located either behind the stove or at the bottom behind the oven drawer. Make sure it has not been accidentally closed. It will cut off gas to the oven only.

the glow plug may be working as in its glowing, but even so they can seem to be working, but if they are weak they can appear o.k. but wont pass enough current to completely open the gas valve and keep it fully open, thats why it sometimes wont light or if they do the flame is wavering or small and you smell gas, just replace the glow plug

Maytag oven will not heat, no gas flow. Broiler works, clock and timer works.

Hi,

You may even see the orange "glow plug" (called a hot surface igniter) glowing orange and so assume that it's OK. Not necessarily!! You have to measure the current/amp drawn by the igniter and compare it to this repair sheet before you can say it's OK or not. The gas valve has a bi-metal that open when a certain amount of current flows through it to heat it up. The igniter is wired in series with the gas valve. As the igniter gets older or weaker, it's resistance increases to the point where not enough current is flowing to the gas valve bimetal to open it up. As a result, the gas valve never opens up. BTW, a common symptom of the early stages of this problem is erratic temperature control in the oven due to delayed firing of the bake burner while cooking.

The hot surface igniter will not come on - check igniter with a ohm meter, you should have continuity through the glow bar, the glow bar can also crack = new igniter time. The glow bar comes on but the main burner will not light - you should have an amp probe to check properly, but often this is a hot surface igniter problem. The hot surface igniter often looses it's ability to get hot enough to open the gas safety valve. The safety valve can fail, but most times it is just a bad hot surface igniter. The hot surface igniter can also quit part way through cooking , in other words the oven may cycle a couple of times and then it just sits there with the red glow from the igniter. See this service sheet for the proper way and amp readings for the hot surface igniter system. Hot surface igniters do weaken and will eventually generate less heat than they normally could. When this happens they can still allow marginally correct current to flow to the oven gas valve for it to open but not get quite hot enough to ignite the gas burner immediately. When this happens, gas released into the oven can sometimes build up to the point where when finally ignited, the amount of gas lit can cause a small explosion inside the oven or cause an odor of gas with out the oven working. Yes, your glow bar igniter can glow orange-red and still be bad!! How a common gas valve works - click here.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

The oven won't turn on. I smell gas but no flame. I'm not sure where the pilot light is located or even if it can be manually lit.

hello,
there is no pilot light,it uses a glow bar style electric ignotor which is weak, it is just getting hot enough to somewhat open the gas valve partitally but not hot enough to fully open valve or ignite the gas,UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you attempt to turn it before replacing the oven ignitor since gas could seep and fill the oven chamber then finally ignite and blow the door out extremely forcefully(with it turned off presents no such danger at all) according to the website i use to look up part numbers the replacement part# is 73001165 you could order it at searspartsdirect.com or look in your phone book and find a appliance parts dist. in your area,or of course call a service company in your area, if i were doing this service call (im in the wash. dc area) the charge would be appx.$450.00

The problem is usually the igniter not reaching the correct amp draw .When the igniter does not reach the correct amp draw it may allow the gas valve to partially open or not open at all. Sometimes the igniter glows but still does not reach the correct amp draw to fully open the gas valve. The igniters are inexpensive and easy to replace. This video will walk you thru the correct procedure for testing an oven igniter. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

Gas oven doesn't light ACS3350

While the ignitor is glowing, tap on the valve with the plastic handle of a large screwdriver. If the burner lights the ignitor is weak and needs replaced. If it does not the valve is bad and it is advisable to change the ignitor also although not required.

Oven will not light but smell gas

i think you probably have a weak ignitor. does the ignitor glow orange?
if it does, or i should say when it does, just tap lightly on the gas valve and see if that causes the gas to flow into the burner and then light.
you can use the handle of a screwdriver to tap with and it wont need to much force.
if this does work, then just replace the ignitor. when they get weak they will glow, but wont draw enough current thru the gas valve to allow it to open. your valve does get voltage but it opens when enough current draw opens the bi-metal portion of the valve to allow gas to flow.
