Question about Craftsman 3 gal. Air Compressor, 1.5 hp, Horizontal k

1 Answer

Have 12 gallon / 1HP Craftsman compressor, accidentally ran it while it was low on oil....about half way low. It shut itself off. Then, I added oil and it started up. But now it builds pressure VERY slowly and not much above I think like 60lbs. Is this motor shot? If not, what can I do to fix? Where can I find a replacement motor? Thanks!!

Not the motor, but probably the compressor shot. Heat from friction (due to running without oil) probably scored the cylinder walls, which allows air to escape past the piston and rings, making the compressor VERY inefficient. Some compressors have replaceable cylinders... Not sure if the very small ones do or not.

I just bought a craftsman pneumatic 1/2-in drive impact wrench. And used it with my craftsman 4-gallon 1hp air compressor tried to loosen the bolts on my car wheel wouldn't loosen them help

Pneumatic tools are rated in cfm (cubic feet per minute). Your 1 HP air compressor is rated at probably not more than 3 cfm while the 1/2 " impact driver needs at least 8 cfm, maybe 12 chm of air.
The compressor must provide more chm than tool rating needs.
It is a problem, by the time you look at five horse power air compressors and larger, a lot of electric power is needed. A circuit of 220 volts, 20, 30, or more amps would be required to run those large expensive compressors.
If you can, return the air tool and get a good electric tool instead.
Leave those high air volume air tools to shops that are so equipped to use, or invest if you must.

does it have oil? take it back for a replaement. pull the belt off and see if the motor is still good. turn the pump by hand to check for free turning.

I just bought a used Craftsman air compressor at a garage sale...100PSI, twin cylinder, 1HP motor. Model # 106.154440. Runs fine, but wondered how to check the oil level in the compressor case and if it...

I have a Sears 106.154581 most likely like yours. You will find a small plug (fill hole) and slightly larger plug on side of pump close to bottom (drain hole). Fill compressor with compressor oil to top thread of fill hole. Oil should look rather clear with very little odor. Compressor oil is available at Lowes for about $3. Good luck

I have a Craftsman 3 gallon 1HP air compressor that will only build pressure up to 25psi. The check valve was checked and looks ok. The pressure regulaor appears to be working ok. Bled off tank.The...

Sounds like the compressor has failed -- probably the valve -- tear down and rebuild is probably the solution, or replace compressor, or just buy another unit. My nature would be to tear it down and see what's going on.

Motor runs pressure stays around 25psi

if they are oilless compressors then the rings are worn

Craftsman 3 gallon 1hp. Motor runs but no pressure buildup. Oil level okay and no obvious leaks.

Your motor is good and your pump is in need of being rebuilt. I would price both the rebuild and the cost of replacement all together as there are many good cheap used compressors crying for a home.

if acualy exhaust / engine pressure is coming out of filter it likely to be a bad valve...does engine blow smaoke or oil? is there also pressure coming out of oil crankcase?....let me know , we'll diagnose it! good luck, marty
