Question about OKI C5500n Laser Printer

Oki c5500n laser printer with streaks in the magenta color

I tested by creating 5 solid color boxes: Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, Black, and a four color black made up of all 4 colors. When I print this test sheet, vertical white stripes appear in the magenta, black and 4 color black. when I print in grey scale none appear.

How can I fix this? do I need to replace a part? The usage menu says my K, C, M and Y drums are all just about ready to replace. Is it the drum or something else?

I suspect you created your colour blocks in Paint which does not give true colours. However the streaks will be certainly created by a worn out drum/s and as you say they are all near to being changed so that would confirm that. An expensive exercise awaits.

SOURCE: Oki c5100n printing colors offset

posted by Halfwalkeer on Nov 13, 2007 Report abuse

Just replaced the color toner cartridges in the c5100N, two OKI (cyan and yellow) and one non-OKI (magenta). Now it appears that registration is completely off.

When printing an image, there is a band of yellow at the top about 6mm high, and a band of purple (not cyan) at the bottom about 6mm high. It seems that the yellow printing LED array is printing offset. I've verified this with a typical test page that shows yellow blipped up by several mm.

What the hell happened ? How can I fix it ?

Thanks -

Dean.
Comment by Halfwalkeer, posted on Jan 02, 2008 Drums are all at 34%. Please don't tell me that the drums only have a 50% lifetime on them, because that would just suck royally. When you say the problem is most likely drums, in what way ? What could have gone wrong ?

I was able to more or less fix the problem ... It took several iterations of ColorMenu->Adjust Registration followed by Maintenence Menu->Menu Reset, but it was finally able to pull the registration back into line.

I got worried at one point - after it was "fixed" the printer was powered off. Upon powerup again, registration was off by several centimeters ! Another round of the above finally "fixed" it again, but I haven't powered it down again.

It was a cheap printer. Maybe this is why ...

Comment by Soulvisitor, posted on Jan 02, 2008 I was thinking about the band of yellow being caused by cleaning blade wearing on drum, drums are garenteed by oki if over 50 %, under that one is on their own ie purchase new if having problems with them

If you can fix problem doing colour calibration then faulty drum is not likely the issue.

Cant stress how many problems are caused by non gen consumables in machines, highly dont recommend their use.

SOURCE: Oki C5800 prints magenta streaks

Streaks can be caused by a number of things
The fuser
The ETB
The toner cartridge
The firmware
The printer needs a cleaning.
The slot in the printer.
Incorrect Media.

Try cleaning the printer, use a lint-free cloth for the ETB, DO NOT touch the belt with your fingers, the oil from fingers will often make things worse.
Always use a lint-free cloth, if you ever encounter dirt inside the printer, dampen the cloth.

Calibrate the printer.
From the printer's control panel menu
Configure Device-> Print Quality-> Calibrate now.
(Press the Checkmark key to advance through menus)

Most likely the cyan ink is burnt. If the ink sticks are left unused (printing more black than color, this will happen.

Print the test pages for PQ troubleshooting from the control panel and examine each print. Cyan will probably have very dark streaks down the page, magenta should look normal, and yellow also will have dark stripes. You need to replace this burnt ink, and the only way is to print. From within paint (or similar accessory in other OS) Create a full page of cyan, and print about 100 - 200 pages, or until the cyan starts to clear up. Yes it is a waste, but much cheaper than a print head, Do this for yellow as well.

If the streaks are only from the magenta then your magenta drum is bad. If you recently replaced it, it may still be under warranty.

Colors are not printing the acutal color

It all depends on the meaning of 'not properly'.

Try creating a document with four different squares, or words, of these colours: yellow, magenta, cyan and black. If all of them print (albeit not with the correct shades) it is probably an ICM driver error. But my guess is that only one of those four colors will print badly, due to a defective color cartridge.
The OKI 5150 makes all perceivable colours using cyan, magenta, yellow and black toners, so if one of these malfunctions, the resulting colors will lack the required shade of, say, yellow, and will appear to be "wrong". The yellow colour itself, of course, would simply disappear (the "yellow" you use might actually be 95% yellow and 5% cyan; then the "yellow" square will be printed as a very light shade of cyan, while the other colors - say, 95% magenta and 5% yellow - will turn out almost exact).

Try with the color test and replace any failing cartridge; if all four (almost) pure colours do print incorrectly, it's unlikely to be a cartridge problem, and we'll have to dig deeper.

Phaser 7700 steaks on Magenta, sometimes yellow.

Each color has its own laser. Use the cleaning wand in the front door to clean the lens covers for each color. You will need to remove the waste toner cartridge in front of the the slots to do this. If that does not cure the problem, you will need to replace the developer housings for the colors that are streaking. The manual can be downloaded at: www.lpscomputer.com/ec/Phaser_7700_Service_Manual.pdf

and parts purchased at: http://www.lpscomputer.com/p-3063-1-116-1115-00-developer-housing.aspx

Light or Faded Areas in Solid Color Prints

If the issue is occuring in the same place on all prints, try the imaging drum (can't remember if this printer even uses one) or the transfer belt/roller (not sure which it uses). If you phone Dell support, they should run you through troubleshooting and send you either of those parts free of charge if you are under warranty. If not, buy them anyways; they don't degrade over time (if kept in the dark) and can be saved for when the currently installed one runs out if you don't need it to fix this issue.
