First you need the software to scan. If you do not have it go to this link and select you operating system (ex: Win Xp, Vista, etc). This is needed for XP, Vista should auto find it and install itself. If not down load the print driver option and Vista should do the rest.

For XP (anything else ask and I'll try to help, Vista see above paragraph) Scroll down to "software" Click on the one for America, download and follow promts.
I would recommend on the first screen after you download it to tell it to extract to a fold (default is c:/3xxxam), not the temporary directory or you will probably have to come back and re extract it again to a real directory. (I already went through that issue, that why I am recomending the c drive directory option, not the tempory directory). Just follow prompts, it is a slow process.

You did not say if you added it to a network or not (I am guessing no, since you couldn't find software, which means you probably do not have an external network print server, which is required to add directly to the network for this model). I am going to go with it is a direct connect via USB, so just follow the direct connect options when you get to that point and once your done, check your start menu for the hp folder, that is where you should find the scanner software.

I get an error message when I scan. It says Error


ISSUE: The error Waiting for PC is displayed on the control panel when scanning, using the Start Scanbutton on the control panel. The user will also notice a Not Setup on PC error when pressing theScan to … button. Note that scan from the PC works properly without an error. SOLUTION: The probable causes for this issue are listed below:
  • Firewall denying access to PC
  • Device polling not enabled
  • The scan to function is not enabled in the HP Toolbox
  • The destination has not been added to the Scan to button from HP toolbox
  • The HP Toolbox is losing the scan to destination
How to troubleshoot this issue:
  1. PC protection software such as firewall software may prohibit proper communication between HP AiO products and Toolbox and scanning software. Firewalls may need to be reconfigured to allow Toolbox to communicate with the AiO. The Toolbox software is similar to Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer in this way. Temporarily disabling firewall software may be helpful in determining if it needs to be reconfigured for Toolbox to operate properly. Please contact your third party firewall software vendor if assistance is needed to reconfigure the firewall. The following third party support Web sites may be useful:
  2. When Device Polling is turned off, the Alerts and the Scan to e-mail or folder options in the HP Toolbox are disabled, and the START SCAN function on the HP LaserJet AiO product control panel is also turned off. CLICK HERE for instructions on how to turn on Device polling.
  3. To program the device SCAN TO ... button, view the device settings. Open the HP Toolbox and click the Scan to tab. For more information, CLICK HERE to view the document titled HP Color LaserJet 2840 AiO Series Products - How to use "Scan To E-mail" or "Scan to Folder" from the Device
  4. The User loses the folder when choosing to save scanned files under the Scan to Folderoption of the Scan to Tab. The User also may lose the email settings under the Scan to Emailoption of the Scan to Tab. The User restarts the toolbox and it works for some time and the problem repeats again. Perform the following in the order listed to resolve this issue:

When I try to scan with my canonscan lide 70 I get a message "specify the program where the scanned image is transferred"


You just need to point the program to where the scanning program was installed. If you just let it auto-load it should be here: (assuming you loaded the free toolbox software)
C:\Program Files\Canon\CanoScan Toolbox Ver5.0\CSTBox.exe
or just look at where the toolbox is installed by searching for the CSTBox.exe file.

Can't copy or scan on canoscan lide 25


You need to install the software drivers You need BOTH programs installed on your PC, Toolbox & Scangear. Also use the driver remover first. Then unplug scanner, reboot, install Scangear first, and toolbox second, then reboot, when at desktop next time, plug in the Scanner. Hopefully it should be all good. Connot make a pdf scan. get a reply thet there not enough space. installed latest drivers. working with xp


Issue: ERROR: Insufficient space on target disk
Solution: Change where temporary files are saved (Toolbox)

Change where temporary files are saved (Toolbox) For an unknown reason, the computer is not allowing temporary data to be written to the general folder chosen by Toolbox at the time of install.
  1. From the CanoScan Toolbox, click the Settings button.
  2. At the bottom you will see a section that states, "Select Folder Where Temporary Files are Saved:".
    Click the Browse button.
  3. Browse to a folder, such as C:\Temp, and then click OK.
  4. Click OK again to exit the Settings window.
  5. Try scanning again.

Can not scan. keep receiving message "unable to open file".


try to reset the file link (toolbox CS -> settinf -> save -> image file) where the scanned file will be saved.

Hi there, yes I did everything per your instructions, Toolbox is installed and it still says, "release the lock switch, detach I/F cable and reconnect. Scanner driver will be closed" and then after clicking on that it says "Unable to open TWAIN source. Please check connection then restart toolbox" I have been to the Canon site and downloaded driver sites and it says everything is working. but when I go to scan it comes up with the boxes I said before. Quite lost at the moment? Thanks Maureen. PS I have unstalled and reinstalled

Are you scanning from Toolbox? Make sure the correct scanner is selected in the Settings section.

What OS is this? Try scanning from various applications.
Does the scanner react at all at any time?

Make sure you have installed ScanGear and not just Toolbox.

Canon 440f won't scan


I had exactly as described on my new 4400f scanner. Have resolved by uninstalling the toolbox software (it was at 5.0.1.2), downloading toolbox s/w from canon site, file name is S6A04mux.exe - toolbox 5.0.1.1 Installed this and all works from the scanner front panel

Lock Switch and IF cable


Mine was doing the same thing. When I get on the program, before I click "acquire" to preview and scan, I click OFF the toolbox and then everything seems to be okay and I can go ahead and scan.
