Mike:

If you have air blowing out of the oil filler cap, I would suspect that the piston rings are shot. The piston rings are supposed to keep the compressed air above the piston, and air seems to be leaking past the piston rings into the crank case.

1 hp 3gal craftsman compressor will only build up to 20lbs pressure in tank. how much compression should single cyl have on compression stroke?

A piston in any engine should be around 100 psi I would guess. A Chevy 350 used to be around 150 psi. An air compressor that only pumps enough air to reach 20psi is obviously too low on compression. Nailers and the like need 80 or more psi. The intake valves may be shot, the unloader might be stuck or piston rings are worn.

How do i change my craftsman 919165200 air compressor from 120v to 240v?

Your Craftsman model 919.165200, 5hp, 20 gallon compressor was designed to run on 115~120v 15amp. I believe that it was made by Campbell Hausfeld and is of the oilless single cylinder type. If however your compressor is oil lubed and has a motor /drive belt configuration it may be able to convert if there is a spec plate on the motor with alternate wiring diagram. Many high-end compressors like Rol Air, Jenny, Dewalt, etc with motor/belt drive have a switch selectable voltage, however one must still change the power cord when using 220v. Good luck with your projects and post again if your have other question.

if its integrated, hooked together,no belt(comp and mtr) its time to save air tank and buy a new one, saving the air tank only gives you more capacity if plumbed to new unit

Loss of power when engaging deck

check your compression. if you have a two cyl engine, start it and ground out each cyl (or pull off the plug) see if engine changes the rpms if one don't change check spark and compression on that side. if you only have one cyl go back to checking compression. get back to me with what you find. ps check your belts to mack sure nothing is in the pulleys like a stick and check under your deck to make sure you don't have a grass build up.

My craftsman 3 gal. air compressor, 921.153101 won't compress air

I WOULD TRY DISCONNECTING THE PIPING FROM THE HEAD DOWN TO THE TANK AND SEE IF ITS BLOWING AIR. COULD THE COMPRESSOR BE RUNNING BACKWARDS - YOU WOULD HAVE HAD TO CHANGE THE WIRING IN THE MOTOR.
VALVES IN THE HEAD COULD ALSO BE BROKEN. YOU CAN REMOVE THE INTAKE AND IT SHOULD **** YOUR FINGERS AT THE OPENING. HOPE THIS HELPS.
