Question about Pentair "Pentair" In Ground Pool Pump At251501

1 Answer

I installed a new pentair de filter and new multiport valve. at start up the filter pressure reads 40 psi. after multiple backwashes and rinses the pressure goes down to about 15 psi but slowly climbes back up to 40psi. The psi is around 15 when the multiport is on recirculate, but when on filter, the psi is too high.

If the pressure is 15 psi on recirculate, and high on filter, the problem is the filter itself, or the valve plumbing. The DE filters are unusal in the fact that they are plumbed like a sand filter, NOT the cartridge filter. If you could give details as to which filter AND multiport valve you have (look on sticker for model number on valve) it would help to figure out if the problem is in the filter or valve.

Tip

Backwashing A Sand Filter with A Push/Pull Slide Valve or Multiport Valve

Lots of people are first time pool owners and pool professionals forget to teach these "newbies" about the simplest aspects of pool ownership.

One of the biggest questions we receive from new homeowners is "How do I go about backwashing my sand filter exactly?"

It doesn't matter if you have a Hayward, Pentair, Jandy, Sta-Rite or any other number of Sand Filters on the market they all utilize the same basic valves for backwashing; a push/pull slide valve or a multiport valve.

To backwash with a multiport valve:
1) Shut off pump motor.
2) Press down on valve handle, rotate valve from FILTER to BACKWASH position.
3) Roll out any backwash hose or open any waste line valves.
4) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
5) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
6) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
7) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to RINSE position. Run on rinse for 15 - 25 seconds.
8) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to FILTER position.
9) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
10) Roll up backwash hose so the dogs use it as a chew toy.

To Backwash a sand filter with a slide valve:
1) Shut off pump motor, roll out backwash hose.
2) Twist to unlock plunger T-handle, push or pull(depending on manufaturer) the plunger 2" - 3".
3) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
4) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
5) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
6) Shut off pump motor and push T-handle back down into locked position.
7) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
8) Roll up backwash hose.

How to know what cycle to use or when to use filter, backwash or rinse?

during normal operation, your multiport valve should be in the "FILTER" position.

Once the pressure in the filter reaches 10psi more than what it was when the filter was clean, you should backwash. turn the pump off, press down and turn the multiport valve to backwash. turn the pump on and watch the effluent water until it goes from dirty to clean. Then place the multiport valve to the rinse position, this will rinse any remaining dirt from the top of the filter and valves so that it does not return to the pool. Once the water comes out clean, return the valve to the filter position.

Do not turn the valve while the pump is on, always make sure to turn the pump off before servicing any equipment.

Sand and murky water being discharged into pool after backwash

You posted this question in Alarm category. but sounds like either your filter laterals, or the backwash valve are bad. I'd need to know what type of filter, and backwash valve you have. is the backwash valve a multiport, or push/pull slide valve, etc... If it's a push/pull valve then the o-rings, or pucks can be bad, or the piston can be broken. if it's a multiport valve, then the spider gasket may need to be replaced. if it's a top mount multiport valve, then it can be broken inside the filter.

Pentair Quad DE system was installed without multiport valve

This is a DE (Diatomaceous earth) IT doesn't have sand and doesn't backwash. You use the bump handle (with pump off and valves closed and vent open and drain dirty water/earth out) Here is a link to the manual for your filter If isn't the exact model they are all on their web site: http://www.haywardnet.com/products/Manuals/pdfs/manual9.pdf

How do I backwash my Pentair Vertical Grid DE filter?

For instructions on backwashing and other trouble shooting, you need an Owner's Manual. You can find one online at the following link:

http://www.pentairpool.com/pdfs/FNSPlusVerticalGridDEFilterOM.pdf

The way you backwash this filter is easy once you get the hang of it!

The first thing you will do is turn off the system, change the valve position to the Backwash position. If you have a Multiport Valve, you will press down on the handle and spin it so that the knotch is pointed to BACKWASH. If you have a Slide Valve, only has two positions, up and down, you turn the handle so that the metal pin is out of the holder and move the handle in the opposite direction. You will need to turn the handle to lock the pin into position.

Once this is done, you will turn on your pump. Pentair recommends that you backwash for 1 minute, then turn off the pump.

If you have the Slide Valve, you will put it back into the FILTER position and then turn the pump back on for 1 minute. If you have the Multiport Valve, you will put it in the RINSE position and then turn the pump back on for 1 minute.

Pentair recommends that you do this cycle a total of three times, backwash/rinse, backwash/rinse, backwash/rinse. AFTER the third time, you will need to open the Air Release Valve at the top of the filter while the pump is OFF and the valve position in back on FILTER. Once this is done, turn on the pump. When you have a steady stream of water coming out of the Air Release Valve, close that up. This way you have no air in the system.

Now, you will mix your DE "Slurry" in a bucket. Depending on your model of filter, you will measure out your DE and mix with water to the consistancy of milk. **IF it is just a backwash, you will only add 80% of the original amount of DE. You only add the total 100% of DE when you completely take the filter apart and clean it out.**

You will slowly pour the slurry into the skimmer that is closest to the pump. This will allow the DE to evenly coat the grids in the filter. Wait about 5 minutes and then check the pressure gauge on the filter. Once the PSI reaches 8 to 10 PSI above this number, it is time to backwash.
