Error Message on CD Rom - will not operate

My Phillips CD Rom in my computer has started giving me an error message " Please insert a CD" when there is, indeed, a CD already in the slot. Can you give a possible fix? the computer reports the "device is working properly".

    I have the same problem (Please insert a CD), but only with a blank disk. It will see and read a disk that has been written to.

Click start control panel administrative tools computer management then select event viewer this may vary depending on what operating system you have


extend the events there you will see errors in red you will no what exactly what the error was and at what time it occured

or click start type in event viewer press ENTER

Causes

  1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.

Solutions

Computer is booting from a non-bootable source

Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM. First verify that no floppy diskette or CD is in the computer, unless you are attempting to boot from a diskette.

Note: This error has also been known to occur when a memory stick is in a card reader and the computer is attempting to boot from it. If you have any card reader or flash reader make sure that no memory stick is inside the computer. Additionally disconnect all USB drives, cameras, ipods, iphones, etc. from the computer.

If you are attempting to boot from a floppy diskette and are receiving this error message it is likely that the diskette does not have all the necessary files or is corrupt.

If you are attempting to install Windows XP or Windows 2000 and are receiving this error message as the computer is booting verify that your computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you are attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device, and not the hard disk drive.

Second, when the computer is booting you should receive the below prompt.

Press any key to boot from the CD

Important: When you see this message press any key such as the Enter key immediately, otherwise it will try booting from the hard drive and likely get the NTLDR error again.

Note: If you are not receiving the above message and your BIOS boot options are set properly it's also possible that your CD-ROM drive may not be booting from the CD-ROM properly. Verify the jumpers are set properly on the CD-ROM drive.

turn the computer off
now turn on and hold down the delete key until the bios screen appears
in the boot tab select first boot as the cd disk, install the cd for win nt in that drive
close down the cd and then restart and it will boot from the cd
BY reformatting the hard drive win nt you have wiped the win nt operating system from the hard drive

Computer does not recognize it as a CD RW drive


When you try to write data to an optical disc, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

* You receive various disc write error messages.
* You experience issues with the drive and the built-in recording feature of Windows XP.
* You experience issues with third-party programs that you use to write data to the disc.
* You cannot read the disc in all versions of Windows.
* You cannot read the disc, or some files on the disk, by using an MP3 player.
* When you add files or folders to a disc that already contains data, some files are lost.
* Recording files to the disc is inconsistent.
* The disc recording operation is consistently unsuccessful.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Troubleshooting specific errors
If you experience one of the following errors, follow the appropriate steps to resolve the error.

* There is no disc in the drive. Please insert a writable CD into drive.
This error can occur if the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device. This error can also occur if the device driver has been corrupted. To resolve this issue, see Method 3 in the "General troubleshooting" section and Method 1 in the "Advanced troubleshooting" section.

* Drive not accessible, incorrect function
This error message typically occurs when you try to write to a CD-R or a CD-RW, and the Windows XP built-in disc recording feature does not recognize the CD drive as a recordable drive. This error message may also occur if specific third-party programs are installed. For more information about how to troubleshoot this error,

when you access the CD-ROM drive, the DVD-ROM drive, or the CD-RW drive
* Error Deleting File or Folder.
Cannot delete file name. Files on this CD-ROM drive are read-only. You cannot copy or move files over to this CD-ROM drive.

This error message can occur because individual files cannot be deleted from the CD-RW. You cannot use the CD disc recording feature of Windows XP for random-access storage while you are writing to disc.

To set the service to Automatic, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc /s, and then click OK.
2. Double-click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.
3. Under Service Status, click Start.
4. Try to write data to a CD.

If you get the error-message when you try to boot your computer, your disk-drive is either:
1. not connected to the motherboard
2. improperly connected to the motherboard
3. dead/dying, so that the Operating System files on the disk-drive *CANNOT* be read.

So, the computer tries to boot from an "alternative" device (either the 3.5-inch device or the CD-ROM device) -- if you don't have any media inserted into either device, you will get the error-message.

A noisy hard drive is never a good sign. It sounds as if the drive is failing or has failed. You didn't say what operating system you have, but let's try....

You can try the following but it may not yield much. If, after these steps, the PC does start up, try to copy as much critical information as you can to either CDs, DVDs, flash drives or whatever you have.

Start the PC
During the boot, you should see a message to press the F2 key to enter setup - press the key when you see this. You key might be different, but press the one it says to press.

When you get into setup, find and change the boot sequence so that your CD-Rom looks first for an operating system

Insert your backup operating system disk - I hope you have that.

If you are not comfortable working with your PC at this level, it's usually best to take it to a repair shop. The advantage here is that even if they can't get the PC to run, many shops can still recover at least part of your data unless the drive is really destroyed.

The disadvantage is the cost - which can vary widely.

Now see the directions below:

Running Recovery Console without installing it If you cannot start your computer, you can run the Recovery Console from the Microsoft Windows XP/2000 startup disks or the Windows XP/2000 CD-ROM.
To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, use the following steps:
  1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
  2. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
  3. When you're prompted to press F6 for mass storage devices - press F10 instead. This will automatically start the Recovery Console.
  4. Alternatively, when the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
  5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.
  6. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  7. At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation.

on a friend's Windows 98 SE or Windows ME computer, create a floppy "Startup disk". Insert in your pc floppy drive and turn on. If floppy drive was not accessed, then get to BIOS and ensure "Boot from floppy drive" is set prior to "boot from hard drive". Once at first screen, select "Boot with CD-ROM driver". Insert CD-ROM and initiate entire re-install of Windows. Windows may do some self-restarting. At first restart do this: get to BIOS and ensure "Boot from hard drive" is set prior to "boot from floppy drive".
